SUMMARYThe objective of the current study was to apply the Vitti–Dias model to investigate phosphorus (P) metabolism in growing pigs fed a diet supplemented with microbial phytase. The basal diet contained maize, defatted rice bran, vegetable oil, soybean meal, limestone, salt and a vitamin and mineral mix. There was no inorganic P in the diet and phytase was added at levels of 253, 759, 1265 and 1748 phytase units (PU)/kg of feed. The compartmental model included four pools of P: (1) gut lumen, (2) plasma, (3) bone and (4) soft tissue. A single dose of 32P was administered, and specific radioactivity was measured in plasma, faeces, bone and soft tissue (muscle, heart, liver and kidney) at different times post-dosing for calculation of P flows between pools. Total P absorbed showed a negative relationship with total P excreted in faeces and was strongly correlated with bone P retention, suggesting that absorbed P was channelled to bone to address its physiological growth. Average efficiency of metabolic utilization of absorbed P was estimated to be 0·94, with 0·52 g/g of total net P balance being accreted in bone and the rest in soft tissue (including muscle and some vital organs). The Vitti–Dias model provided suitable representation of P interchange between compartments (in particular, flows between gut and plasma and partitioning of available P between bone and soft tissue), resulting in estimates of P flows comparable with values calculated from balance data.

resUMo Objetivou-se simular pesos de suínos machos e fêmeas (de 1 a 154 dias de idade) através da distribuição de probabilidade uniforme num intervalo [a,b]. Foram ajustados os modelos de regressão (logístico, potência, tangente hiperbólica, gamma e polinomial cúbico) para explicar a possível relação do peso com o número de dias dos suínos. Verificou-se que os modelos logístico, gamma e polinomial cúbico apresentaram as melhores estimativas para explicar o comportamento do peso dos suínos machos e fêmeas. O modelo logístico apresentou R²= 0,975 e AIC (critério de informação de Akaike)=13,34 para os machos e R²= 0,9787 e AIC= 10,16 para as fêmeas. O modelo gamma apresentou grau de explicação de R²= 0,991 e AIC= 99,33 para os machos e R²= 0,9941 e AIC= 90,602 para as fêmeas, enquanto que o modelo polinomial cúbico apresentou R= 0,9995 e AIC=64,2 para os machos e R²= 0,9995 e AIC= 31,728 para as fêmeas. Optouse pelo modelo polinomial cúbico para explicar o comportamento do peso simulado dos suínos, pois o mesmo apresentou R² alto e baixo AIC além de menos parâmetros que os outros modelos. This study aimed to simulate data to the weight of boar and pig sows (1 to 154 days old) through the uniform probability distribution on an interval [a, b]. Five regression models (logistic, hyperbolic tangent, power, gamma and cubic polynomial) were adjusted to account for the possible weight ratio to tage of pigs in days. The logistic and gamma cubic polynomial models showed the best estimates to account for the weight of the behavior of boar and sow pigs. The logistic model showed R² = 0.975 and AIC (Akaike's information criterium)= 13.34 for boars and R²= 0.9787 and AIC= 10.16 for sows. The gamma model presented a degree of explanation of R²= 0.991 and AIC= 99.33 for boars and R²= 0.9941 and AIC= 90.602 for sows, while the cubic polynomial model showed R²= 0.9995 and AIC= 64.2 for boars and R²= 0.9995 and AIC= 31.728 for sows. the cubic polynomial model was chosen to explain the behavior of the simulated weight of the pigs, whose model showed the best fit with fewer parameters than the other models. RESUMOO estudo do crescimento, por meio de ajustamento de uma função que descreva todo o período de vida do animal, relacionando peso e idade tem sido amplamente discutido nas últimas décadas. O peso de caprinos sem raça definida, mestiços e Anglo-nubiana foram simulados através da distribuição de probabilidade uniforme num intervalo [a,b]. Foram ajustados os modelos de regressão logístico, gompertz, polinomial quadrático e gamma para explicar possível relação do peso/idade dos caprinos. Verificou-se que os modelos polinomial quadrático e gamma apresentaram as melhores estimativas para explicar o comportamento do peso das diferentes raças dos caprinos. O modelo gamma apresentou grau de explicação R² = 99,36% para caprinos sem raça definida, mestiços R² = 99,81% e Anglo-nubiana R² = 99,77%, enquanto que o modelo polinomial quadrático apresentou R²= 99, 52% para caprinos sem raça definida, R² = 99,84% para mestiços e Anglo-nubiana de R² = 99,84%. Optou-se pelo modelo gamma para explicar o comportamento do peso dos caprinos independente da raça avaliada, pois o mesmo apresentou alto poder de explicação e valores pequenos de critério de informação de Akaike e de soma de quadrados dos resíduos, além de apresentar um parâmetro a menos que o modelo quadrático.
