Show more

“…These results correlate with the effect of phonological similarity, which has been cited above. Ferreira and Sagrilo (2012) assessed children male and female and observed better performance on verbal span in both genders in the repetition of two-syllable words with different phonology and semantics than in two-syllable words with equal phonology and different semantics. According to Andrade (2002) subjects with ADHD showed better recall of words with semantic similarity, since it compensates for the difficulty caused by phonological similarity and that access to the meaning of each word can also facilitate your recall.…”

“…In regard to the auditory span, EG subjects were able to recall 3.63 and 3.00 words, respectively, for bi-syllabic words with dissimilar phonology and semantics and those with like phonology and dissimilar semantics. Regarding the visual span, EG subjects experienced greater difficulty in recall in direct and reverse order than CG subjects, with both groups encountering greater difficulty in recall in reverse order, as is explained by the need for greater attentional control, cognitive flexibility and planning in selecting a strategy to invert items displayed visually (Hasselhorn & Grube, 2003;Ferreira, 2011;Sagrilo & Ferreira, 2012). CG subjects performed substantially better in recalling words in reverse order than their EG counterparts, in conformity with Andrade's research (2002).…”

“…In another study, Sagrilo and Ferreira (2013) evaluated executive functions of children aged between six and seven years, comparing boys and girls, based on the working memory component, using verbal and visual span as instruments. The results showed that girls tended to have better performance in the verbal span, and boys in the visual span.…”
