Show more

“…The literature indicates that the CI is an intervention with beneficial effects for hearing detection and speech perception also in the adult population (8) , showing improvements in hearing thresholds only three months after the cochlear implant (9) , which demonstrates that the CI can provide many adults with an opportunity to improve their speech and communication skills (10) .…”

“…This enables the detection of low-intensity sounds and the perception of spectral details, which are prerequisites for the development of auditory, language, and communication skills. 26,27 Another important correlation was observed regarding the speech perception protocols at each follow-up, in which there was a progressive improvement in hearing and language skills with an increase in the duration of CI use. This is consistent with the clinical reasoning that CI provides audibility to environmental and speech sounds, maintaining the perception of the different intensities and frequencies.…”

“…It is necessary taking into consideration that the behavioral assessment of children may generate values higher than the true auditory thresholds, since the development of hearing and motor skills leads to more mature responses (4,10,15) .…”

“…The visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) technique by Lidén and Kankkunen (3) may be used as viable method in the auditory assessment of babies who reached the chronological/development age of 5 or 6 months and show cervical control. The VRA is the gold standard technique used in the behavioral assessment of auditory sensitivity in young children (between 6 and 30 months old) (4) .…”
