Peppermint is an important aromatic and medicinal plant used across the world in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. However, there is a lack of agronomic research on this crop which hinders the implementation of best agricultural practice at farm level. Plant analysis, for instance, cannot be used as a tool to implement a suitable fertilizer recommendation program, since sufficiency ranges and crop nutrient removals have not yet been established. Thus, the main objectives of the present work were to assess the response of peppermint to varying nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and boron (B) rates, to establish sufficiency ranges from macro, micronutrients and SPAD-readings and to estimate crop nutrient removals in the aboveground biomass. Field trials and pot experiments were conducted from 2013 to 2015 in a wide range of conditions involving 12 N, P, K or B fertilizer trials and a total of 48 cuts of biomass. Nitrogen fertilization increased dry matter yield of peppermint on the vast majority of sampling dates. In contrast, P, K, or B did not produce a significant effect on dry matter yield in any of the experiments. The sufficiency ranges set for macronutrients N, P, K, Ca and Mg are respectively 32.

The use of legumes as fertilizer haqs been a viable option for the farmers who work in the production of medicinal plants with agroecological management. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the production of mint under planting densities of mung bean in loam argisol yellow red latosol. The experiment was conducted at the Rafael Fernandes Experimental Farm, in the Alagoinha district, rural area of Mossoró, RN, Brazil, from August 2016 to March 2017. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with the treatments arranged in 4 x 2 factorial scheme with three replicates. The first factor consisted of sowing densities (50; 100; 150 and 200 plants m-2) and the second factor was management systems such as incorporation and permanence (covered) of mung bean biomass on the soil surface. The cultivar "Mentha piperita" was used for the mint crop. The evaluated characteristics were the following: biomass height, green mass production, number of bunches, dry mass production, oil content and oil production of mint. The sowing density of 150 plants m-2 of mung bean provided production and number of mint bunches of 2.63 kg m-2 and 26.3 units m-2, respectively. For the forms of biomass management (incorporated and covered), no statistical difference was observed for the characteristics of the production of green mass, number of bunches, content and oil production of mint. The use of mung bean as a green manure for mint production is feasible to be used by farmers in northeastern Brazil.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram investigar a influência da qualidade da luz no crescimento e no acúmulo de constituintes voláteis de Mentha spicata cultivada in vitro. Segmentos nodais de plântulas já estabelecidas foram mantidos sob lâmpadas fluorescentes e diodos emissores de luz (LEDs) com as regiões espectrais nas cores verde, amarelo, vermelho, azul e branco, e nas combinações entre vermelho e azul (1:1; 2:2 e 2:1). Após 45 dias, parâmetros de crescimento, área foliar, índices de crescimento, pigmentos fotossintéticos e análise da composição química volátil de folhas por headspace – CG/FID foram avaliados. A combinação 1:2 proporcionou maiores biomassas seca de folhas, raiz e total. As plântulas dos tratamentos verde, amarelo, fluorescente e vermelho apresentaram características de estiolamento. Em relação à composição química volátil, os constituintes majoritários α-pineno, sabineno, β-pineno, mirceno, 1,8-cineol e carvona foram identificados. Plântulas crescidas sob LEDs verde e amarelo resultaram maior acúmulo de carvona. Assim, este estudo contribuiu para o entendimento das alterações causadas pela qualidade de luz no crescimento in vitro e na composição química volátil de hortelã. Conclui-se que a micropropagação de Mentha spicata sob LEDs na combinação entre vermelho e azul 1:2 é o mais favorável para o crescimento e teor de carvona e de 1,8-cineol.
