The experiment used a completely randomized block design with three replications, in a 4 x 3 factorial scheme (4 amounts and 3 divisions). Treatments consisted of four amounts of roostertree (6; 19; 32 and 45 t ha -1 in a dry base), in three divisions (30% 15 days before sowing (DBS) + 70% at 30 days after sowing (DAS), 40% at 15 DBS + 60% for DAS and 50% at 15 DBS + 50% at 30 DAS). The carrot cultivar planted was 'Brasilia'. The characteristics evaluated were: plant height; number of stems per plant; shoot dry weight; and the commercial, total and classified productivity of the roots. The greatest agronomic performance of the carrot was obtained from the amount of 45 t ha -1 roostertree incorporated in the soil, divided into 30% 15 days before sowing + 70% 30 days after sowing.
Intercropping systems of cowpea with radish are beginning to be deployed in the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte state. The great challenge is to know whether or not there is productive efficiency in these systems when fertilized with organic matter produced by spontaneous species from the ‘Caatinga’ biome. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of cowpea-radish intercropping systems under different amounts of rooster tree biomass incorporated into the soil. The study was conducted at the experimental farm Rafael Fernandes, rural zone of Mossoró, RN, in the period from June to September 2013, in an experimental design of randomized blocks with four treatments and five replicates. The treatments consisted of the following amounts of rooster tree biomass incorporated into the soil (10, 25, 40 and 55 t ha-1 on a dry weight basis). The best productive performance of the cowpea-radish intercrop was obtained when the rooster tree biomass amount of 50.01 t ha-1 was incorporated to the soil. The use of rooster tree biomass as green manure is agronomically viable in intercropped systems of cowpea-radish.
-The use of spontaneous species as green manure in the production of vegetables is slowly starting to produce satisfactory results. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the productive performance of lettuce at different quantities and times of decomposition of dry scarlet starglory (Merremia aegyptia L.) incorporated into the soil. The present study was carried out from October to December 2006 in a vegetable garden of Plant Sciences Department of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Mossoró-RN¸ Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with the treatments arranged in a factorial 4 x 4 + 1, with three replications. The treatments consisted of the combination of four dry scarlet starglory amounts incorporated into the soil (2.6; 5.2; 7.8 and 10.4 t ha -1 of dry matter) with four different decomposition times (0; 10; 20 and 30 days before transplanting of lettuce -DBT), plus one additional treatment (80 t ha -1 of cattle manure, a traditional treatment in the lettuce cropping). The lettuce cultivar grown was 'Babá de Verão'. The evaluated characteristics were: height and diameter of plants, number of leaves per plant, fresh and dry mass of the lettuce shoots. The incorporation of dry scarlet starglory into the soil influenced the productive performance of lettuce in a positive way, thereby showing promise for use as a green manure.
