Abstract: In Brasilia, self-reported height can be used for subgroups of women with more than 12y of study and men under 60y of age. Men with adequate BMI over estimate their weight when compared to overweight and obese men. Self-reported measures can be used for excess weight population follow-up.

“…However, a comparative analysis of the groups revealed significant differences, showing that the lack of anthropometric information was higher in adolescent pregnant women with worse sociodemographic and health conditions and obstetric results 24 . Given this, the difference between the groups was controlled in multinomial logistic regression, in an attempt of minimizing the effect of possible selection bias.…”

“…The use of self-reported data has been recommended in conducting large populational studies 23,24 ; however, in this study, these were validated during field work of the original project 25 . For the classification of the pre-gestational nutritional status, according to the BMI, the cutoff points and the classification recommended by the committees: IOM 14,15 and WHO 16 , were used, being this last one with the Z score adapted classification proposed for the food and nutritional surveillance in Brazil 19 .…”

“…We collected information through a telephone interview based on detailed coffee intake, socio-demographic aspects, physical activity, cigarette smoking, alcohol intake and self-reported weight and height. Self-reported weight and height have been previously validated in Brazil (Peixoto et al, 2006) and in Brasília (Thomaz et al, 2013).…”

“…On the other hand, self-reported weight and height has limitations, since individuals may underestimate their weight and overestimate their height. However, an epidemiologic study found that the use of self-reported measurements for determining nutritional status has good validity compared with measured weight and height 20 . Anyway, the prevalences of overweight and the associations with borderline 95%CI, that is, close to 1.00, should be interpreted with caution; the former, because of possible information bias, and the latter, because the sample size allows type 1 error.…”
