The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of consumers and non-consumers, the reasons and foods associated with coffee intake among adults from the Federal District, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional population-based survey conducted by telephone interview (n= 1,368). We collected information on detailed coffee intake, socio-demographic aspects and personal characteristics. The coffee had an average daily intake of 319 mL. Individuals were more likely to drink coffee at an older age (68%) and with higher body mass index (58%). The most cited reason for consuming coffee was the "personal pleasure" (48%), followed by "habit / tradition" of consuming coffee. Among non-consumers of this beverage, the main reason was not liking the taste and / or aroma of coffee (62%). The method of coffee preparation used was by infusion (86%) and sugar was the main sweetener used by 83% of consumers. The majority of consumers (59%) reported consuming coffee with certain foods such as bakery products. The results from our study may suggest that the popularity of coffee can be attributed to its taste, personal pleasure and habit, and the consumption is more likely to occur with the advance of age and with intake of other foods. Keywords: coffee; consumption; Brazilians; taste; beverage.Pratical Application: Dur study permitted evaluation of personal characteristics of coffee consumers and non-consumers, different methods of coffee preparation, including caffeinated, decaffeinated, filtered and non-filtered, as well as the choice, reasons and preferences for foods eaten with coffee. Given that the potential interest of our results is from Brazilian readers and the increase interest of the functional properties of coffee there are potential for citations and downloads from the scientific community, regulatory agencies, industry, and public health professionals.
The portion of inactive individuals in Brasília can be considered low, when compared to estimates from other Brazilian cities. Differences in BMI and physical activity score found between sexes are associated with the type of physical activity practiced.
Objective: To analyze the indicators of exclusive breastfeeding (EB) in Brasilia's University Hospital (BUH) during a 10-year interval and to verify associated factors to early weaning. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted by chart review of children attending the Pediatric Clinic during 1999 and 2008. The duration of exclusive breastfeeding was categorized at four months and four months or more. Prevalence ratios for early weaning (EB<4 months) were estimated with a model of Poisson regression and robust variance. Non-parametric Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the exclusive breastfeeding duration in the studied years. Results: Among 2,173 patients, 1,443 in 1999 and 730 in 2008. There was an increase from 110.7 to 123.6 days in the duration of EB. A significant association between maternal education and early weaning was shown, with a 12.6% higher prevalence in mothers with less than eight years of schooling compared to those with 11 or more years. No other associations were found in the study.
Conclusions:Similarly to what was found in Brazilian capitals and Brasilia, there was an increase in the length of exclusive breastfeeding related to mother educational level. Nevertheless, the duration exclusive breastfeeding is still below the threshold of 180 days recommended by the World Health Organization. Key-words: breast feeding; weaning; risk factors.

OBJECTIVE:To analyze socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with physical activity level among workers.
METHODS:Cross-sectional study conducted in Brazil's Federal District, from 2000 to 2001, with a representative sample of 1,044 workers from both sexes, who are covered by the Programa de Alimentação do Trabalhador (Workers' Food Program). Binary logistic regression was used to determine possible risk factors associated with physical activity level and selected by the backward elimination process. Interactive effects of the variables were verifi ed in the fi nal model by means of the odds ratio for physical activity level >1.4.
RESULTS:The fi nal model included sex, income and level of education. Male individuals who only fi nished elementary school and earned less than four Brazilian minimum wages per month were the most likely to show physical activity level ≥1.4. The odds ratio estimate indicated that men were fi ve times more likely to show physical activity level ≥1.4 than women. Individuals who only fi nished elementary school and had an income equal to or below four minimum wages were two times more likely to show physical activity level ≥1.4 than individuals who earned more than four minimum wages and had a university degree or higher.
CONCLUSIONS:Results indicate that the factors associated with physical activity level among workers are the following: male, elementary school level, and income below four Brazilian minimum wages per month.
In Brasilia, self-reported height can be used for subgroups of women with more than 12y of study and men under 60y of age. Men with adequate BMI over estimate their weight when compared to overweight and obese men. Self-reported measures can be used for excess weight population follow-up.
