This article is based on the assumption that the construction of scientific knowledge is a social process characterized by the recursive dynamic between the social and intellectual dimensions. In light of this statement, we investigated how the construction of the institutional perspective is delineated in the context of organizational studies in Brazil from 1993 to 2007. The study is based on documentary research of articles published in scientific journals and at academic events. For this purpose, we analyzed social networks and used bibliometric indicators in order to map the cooperation relationships between researchers and intellectual framework, based on the cited authors. The results show the influence of social relationships in the process of constructing scientific knowledge. The findings reveal that the expansion of the field is based on the growing elaboration of a social organization with close links to the activities of continuant and transient researchers. These circumstances denote the stratification both of production and the relationships between authors, since continuant and transient researchers are responsible for the intermediation of relations and the consolidation of production in the academic field that is being analyzed. The findings also reveal a secondary dynamic of the activities of researchers located on the margin of the network and the presence of Brazilian researchers among the most cited authors, an indication of a legitimized local intellectual base.

Knowledge and Power of the Civil Society: an empirical study of Brazilian professionals working in the NGOs

This study critically analyses the way Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operate in Brazil and their contribution to the development of the Brazilian civil society. The notion of "power fields" and "habitus", proposed by Bourdieu (1989; 1996), provides the theoretical backdrop to our discussions. This focusses largely on the recursive connection between structure and agency which resonates with the work of Fligstein (2006). This study seeks to critically analyse the learning and social practice developed by professionals in NGOs in their daily activities. This study is based on qualitative research and the results indicated that the knowledge produced by Brazilian NGOs, through the recursive connection between the agents of the fields and the structures underpinning them, contributes to the expansion and transformation of the field in which they operate. This perspective shows that the knowledge generated by this NGOs give them a certain level of power and influence in the Brazilian civil society.

Com este estudo objetiva-se identificar influências do ambiente institucional sobre a prática de avaliação de atividades das organizações do terceiro setor de Belo Horizonte (MG). São discutidas as bases de racionalidade, subjacentes a essas influências, que orientam o comportamento tanto dos agentes institucionais quanto o das organizações. Pondera-se que, em busca de legitimidade e aceitação social, as organizações estão sendo pressionadas a conformar suas estruturas em função desses agentes, que agem com uma racionalidade predominantemente instrumental. Destarte, as infl uências, segmentadas a partir de cada um dos agentes institucionais, assim se apresentaram nos testes estatísticos realizados: em relação à forma jurídica, as organizações que se estruturam como fundações apresentam maior probabilidade de avaliar seus resultados do que aquelas que se estruturam como associações. Os títulos e certificações não apresentaram influência sobre a avaliação de resultados. A influência tanto dos conselhos quanto dos financiadores mostrou-se signifi cativa. Portanto, considera-se que o sucesso organizacional parece estar cada vez mais vinculado aos fatores que proporcionam o atendimento às muitas pressões e forças institucionais que cada vez exigem níveis mais elevados de desempenho organizacional.
