The volume of biodegradable solid waste and its inadequate disposal have led to serious environmental problems, requiring efficient measures that prioritize the recycling of these wastes, promoting sustainability. The objective of this research was to monitor the behavior of physical parameters during the organic waste composting process. For this, 5 piles of organic waste were built through the composting technique developed according to the windrow method. The piles were composed of 70% of plant material, and 30% varied between manure and food remains. The piles were composed of 70% of plant material, and 30% varied between manure and food remains. The proportions were: I pile, 1:1 (15% manure and 15% rest of food); Pile II, 2:1 (20% manure and 10% rest of food); Cell III, 1:2 (10% manure and 20% rest of food); (30% manure and 0% rest of food) and the V pile in the ratio of 0:3 (0% manure and 30% rest of food). The evaluated parameters were temperature, moisture, pH, TOC, TN and C/N ratio. During the process of compost maturation, the parameters evaluated were kept within the established standards for the composting process.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera Lam extract on the removal of total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), in different filter media for treating wastewater of dairy cattle breeding (DCW). The moringa seed extract was obtained by grinding 50 g of seeds in one liter of distilled water and, after passing the solution through a quantitative paper filter of 25 microns, 60 mL of the extract were added to wastewater from cattle breeding before the filtration process in organic filters made of thin coal, bamboo leaves, eucalyptus leaves, gliricidia branches and sawdust. This was followed by the completely randomized experimental design, adopting a factorial of 5 x 2. Aliquots of filtered effluent were collected and the total solids (TS) concentrations, total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were determined. It was found that the increase in the efficiency of removal of COD and total solids can be attributed to the coagulating power of the moringa seed extract, wherein the filter medium with bamboo leaves presented the best performance, showing potential for use as alternative filter material in the primary treatment of DCW.

RESUMOEste trabalho apresenta o desenvolvimento e a avaliação de um sistema de tratamento de águas residuárias de suinocultura constituído de decantador e seguido de reator anaeróbio de manta de lodo (reator UASB), em escala real. O reator UASB foi construído de alvenaria e concreto armado. Coletaram-se amostras do esgoto bruto e do efluente do decantador e reator UASB, e se monitoraram os seguintes parâmetros: temperatura, pH, alcalinidade, ácidos voláteis totais (AVT), sólidos suspensos totais (SST), sólidos suspensos voláteis (SSV), demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO) e demanda química de oxigênio (DQO), de acordo com os métodos estabelecidos pelo Standard Methods (APHA, 1998). Os resultados mé-dios de remoção total de DQO e de DBO foram de 93 e 92%, respectivamente. As concentrações médias de DQO, DBO e SST no efluente final foram de 0,8, 1,8 e 0,8 g L -1 , respectivamente. A carga orgânica volumétrica (COV) aplicada no reator UASB variou de 1,1 a 17,5 kg DQO m -3 d -1 . O sistema decantador-reator UASB apresenta-se como alternativa promissora para o tratamento de águas residuárias de suinocultura.Palavras-chave: digestão anaeróbia, dejetos de suínos, escala real, reator UASB Evaluation of performance of UASB reactor in swine wastewater treatment ABSTRACTThis research presents the development and evaluation of a system for treatment of swine wastewaters constituted by slat settler, followed by upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, at full scale. The UASB reactor was completely made of masonry and reinforced concrete. The evaluation of the treatment system was carried out through samples collected in the influent and effluent from the settler and UASB reactor. The following parameters were analyzed: temperature, pH, alkalinity, total volatile acids (VFA), suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), according to the methods established by the Standard Methods (APHA, 1998). The mean results of COD and BOD removal were 93 and 92%, respectively. The mean concentrations of COD, BOD and TSS in the final effluent were 790, 1818 and 854 g L -1 , respectively. The volumetric organic load (VOL) in the UASB reactor ranged from 1.1 to 17.5 kg COD m -3 d -1 . The system slat settler-UASB reactor showed itself to be a promising alternative for the treatment of swine wastewaters.
