ABSTRACTConserving the environment through the implementation of conservation units, that is, designating areas that should be specially protected and as an instrument for the management of forest and soil remnants, are increasingly worldwide practices. For this, it is necessary to gather the representations about the desires, needs and values of the population inserted in these places, which are generally quite inhabited. The communities that hold these areas are not always included in decisions about the current and future conditions of protected areas. The implantation of these can cause socio-cultural impacts. This article made an analysis about the knowledge of the neighborhood community Adhemar Garcia, near the Caieira Municipal Natural Park, an integral protection conservation unit in the city of Joinville, SC. The methodology used was supported by a qualitative approach, with some quantifiable data where, through the hierarchical vocation of words, the community attributed values through its social representations. The values identified were: "negativist", "moralistic", "naturalistic", "aesthetic", "ecological-scientific", "humanist", "utilitarian" and "dominator", demonstrating how the community sees the Park. These values provide subsidies for them to be reworked, through community involvement with this conservation unit.
