Community-acquired pneumonia by Chlamydophila pneumoniae: a clinical and incidence study in Brazil

Abstract: As there was not any data on Chlamydia pneumoniae (TWAR) infections in Brazil so far, a prospective cohort study of adult patients hospitalized due to CAP was carried out for one year in a Brazilian university general hospital to detect the incidence of CAP by Chlamydophila pneumoniae (TWAR) for one year. During a whole year 645 consecutive patients hospitalized due to an initial presumptive diagnosis of respiratory diseases by ICD-10 (J00-J99), excluding upper respiratory diseases, were screened; 59 consecuti… Show more

“…Using a cut-off titer of 1:16, a higher overall seropositivity of C. pneumoniae IgG was found in CAP patients compared with healthy controls. The IgG seropositivity in Jordanian CAP patients is considered one of the highest compared to rates reported previously for adult CAP populations in many regions of the world, which ranged from 50% to 70% [16,[29][30][31][32]. On the other hand, the rate of IgG detection in apparently healthy controls estimated here is analogous to overall C. pneumoniae seroprevalence previously recorded in healthy Jordanian adults [10,11].…”

“…The teams who initially assess patients selected for admission in order to access the proper utilization of medications, as well as the upcoming clinical examination of patients, particularly the older individuals with chronic illness and similar pattern, were also found in other study conducted by Chedid et al (2007).…”

“…Chlamydophila pneumoniae causes respiratory tract infections including pneumonia. It has been diagnosed in the last 15 years where C. pneumoniae is the pathogen that causes CAP (Chedid et al, 2007). Elderly individuals are more prone to CAP in comparison to younger individuals (Stupka et al, 2009).…”

“…[ 25 26 ] Different countries had variable morbidity, from 1.4% to 8.0% listed in [ Table 1 ]. [ 25 27 28 29 30 ] In China, C. pneumoniae was found in 3.5% of CAP cases in children and 2.7% in adults. China had less disease prevalence than some other developing countries Table 1 .…”
