OBJECTIVE:To identify psychosocial aspects of work associated with common mental disorders in workers who maintain electrical transmission lines and equipment. METHODS:A cross-sectional study was performed with 158 workers in the maintenance sector of an electric power company, in Northeastern Brazil. The main independent variable were the psychosocial aspects of work, measured according to the demand-control model (passive job, active job, low-strain job, and high-strain job), while the dependent variable was the prevalence of common mental disorders, measured by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20). The relationships between variables were analyzed in multiple logistic regression models, considering a 5% signifi cance level. RESULTS:The prevalence of common mental disorders was 20.3%, varying according to the four categories of the demand-control model. The high-strain job group showed a prevalence that was 2.7 times higher than that of the lowstrain job group, after adjustment for the "physical activity practice", "leisure", "level of education" and "social support" covariables. CONCLUSIONS:The prevalence of common mental disorders was associated with psychosocial aspects present in the work of electricians, especially high-strain jobs, in addition to high psychological demand and low social support.

Actions in small companies to promote occupational health: the case of the food and beverage sector Agir em empresas de pequena e média dimensão para promover a saúde dos trabalhadores: o caso do setor de alimentos e bebidas Ada A. Nascimento 3 AbstractObjectives: To describe working conditions in small companies in the food and beverage sector and to assess the health and the work ability of the selected workers. Methods: Social security data and records from periodic medical examinations were analyzed. For the observations of the work conditions, we used a data sheet created specifically for this study to apply the Short Ergonomic Assessment.For the survey, the Work Ability Index (WAI) and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) were used. Results: The following risk factors and distress-generating situations were observed: manual transport of loads; work performed while standing and in production lines; improvised workbenches; hazardous facilities; and poorly maintained machines. Most of the workers were male with a mean age of 32 years. The mean WAI score was 43 (SD=4.25), suggesting good work ability. Musculoskeletal diseases were the conditions most frequently diagnosed and the most frequently self-reported symptoms. According to the NHP, the workers' general health status could be considered good. Conclusions: Despite the relevance of small companies in the national economy, many of them are family-based and lack the capital needed to invest in infrastructure and productive processes. Furthermore, the lack of knowledge about occupational health and safety puts employees at risk. Positive results were discerned following the present study that included investigation, training and intervention to support small companies, which are generally excluded from broader social actions. The results could be documented through the longitudinal monitoring of the companies.Key words: occupational health; work capacity; perception of health; working conditions; small companies. ResumoObjetivos: Descrever as condições de trabalho em micro e pequenas empresas do setor de alimentos e bebidas e avaliar a saúde e a capacidade para o trabalho dos trabalhadores selecionados. Segundo o PSN, o estado geral de saúde dos trabalhadores pode ser considerado bom. Conclusões: Apesar da relevância das empresas de pequena dimensão na economia nacional, a base familiar e o reduzido capital explicam os baixos investimentos na estrutura física e nos processos produtivos. Ainda, a falta de conhecimento sobre segurança e saúde no trabalho gera situações de risco para o empregado.Vislumbram-se resultados positivos, que poderão ser documentados por meio de monitoramento longitudinal, após esta experiência que aliou investigação, formação e intervenção para apoiar essas empresas, geralmente excluídas de ações sociais mais amplas.Palavras-chave: saúde do trabalhador; capacidade para o trabalho; percepção de saúde; condições de trabalho; pequenas empresas.

Resumo. O presente estudo buscou avaliar a diferença nas dimensões do tecnoestresse entre homens e mulheres, assim como possíveis associações de suas dimensões com a satisfação com a vida, com a carreira e com a interação trabalho-família. A amostra foi constituída por 247 sujeitos que utilizam tecnologias de informação e comunicação no trabalho, sendo a maioria deles mulheres (58,9%). Foram encontradas diferenças entre as dimensões de tecnoestresse em homens e mulheres, em que os homens relevaram maior descrença. Em relação à satisfação com a carreira, com a vida e com a interação entre trabalho e família, foram encontradas associações diferenciadas entre homens e mulheres. São discutidas as especificidades das variáveis associadas em relação aos dois grupos, bem como levantam-se hipóteses explicativas/elucidativas para os achados. Implicações para a prática e limitações da investigação são também apresentadas.Palavras-chave: tecnoestresse, satisfação com a vida, interação trabalho-família, diferenças de gênero.Abstract. This study aimed to evaluate the differences between males and females on technostress dimensions, as well as possible associations with life and career satisfaction, and with work-family interaction. The sample comprised 247 users of information and communication technologies at work, and the majority of them were female (58.9%). Differences between technostress dimensions amongst males and females were found, whereas males showed greater disbelief. Regarding career and life satisfaction, and work-family interaction, different associations amongst males and females were also detected. We discuss the particularities of the variables in both groups, as well raise explanatory hypotheses for our findings.
