Show more

“…It might reflect power, which is a potential explanation given our modest sample size. Moreover, only one measure of morphological awareness was included in the study, albeit one that best discriminates similar samples (e.g., Mota, Santos, & Guimarães, 2014). And yet, this pattern in our study with Portuguese-speaking children at Grade 2 is consistent with that in Jarmulowicz et al's (2008) study with Grade 3 English-speaking children.…”

“…Morphological awareness was assessed using a word analogy task that included both inflectional and derivational transformations. This task was adapted to Portuguese by Mota, Santos, and Guimarães (2014), who found validity evidence for this task in a Brazilian sample. The task focused on morphological changes that are characteristic of the Portuguese language rather than lexical characteristics such as length and word frequency.…”

“…Furthermore, a relationship between morphological awareness and the speed of reading and word identification was observed (19) . Taking the relevant limitations into account, most of the studies consider, respectively, the need for tests with greater validity and reliability for the assessment of morphological awareness (22,26) , as well as the need for inclusion of tests for later control of phonological awareness, vocabulary, and general knowledge, thus reducing the increase of influences and confounding factors (12,18,21,24,31) . Some authors also stress the need for caution in the analyses and generalization of morphologic awareness tests.…”
