“…Despite this lack of emphasis, it is possible to identify two primary functions of values in the psychological literature: (a) to guide human actions (Rokeach, 1973;Schwartz, 1992) and (b) to express human needs (Inglehart, 1977;Maslow, 1954). Values are often used to examine cultural variability. Yet, little research has focused on the functions that values fulfill and the implications of these functions for understanding cultural variability. This paper describes a theoretical analysis of the functions of values based on 2 widely accepted pan-cultural functions: values guide actions and express needs. The theoretical model proposes that the first function differentiates values according to the goals pursued (personal, central, or social goals), whereas the second function differentiates values according to the needs expressed (survival or thriving needs). A combination of these 2 functions yields 6 basic values (structural hypothesis) with specific marker values (content hypothesis). Support for the hypotheses was obtained in a large convenience national sample (N = 5,176) of Brazilian university students with confirmatory factor analysis and multidimensional scaling. Central values were located between personal and social values, and survival and thriving values separated into 2 regions. Theoretical and cross-cultural implications of the findings, especially the universality of the general structure of motivational aims, are discussed, along with interpretations of existing value scales from a functional perspective.Keywords: human values, functions, structure, content, Brazil Los valores se emplean para examinar la variabilidad cultural, pero ha sido escasa la investigación centrada en las funciones de los valores y sus implicaciones para comprender la variabilidad cultural. El artículo analiza teóricamente las funciones de los valores basado en 2 funciones panculturales ampliamente aceptadas: los valores guían acciones y expresan necesidades. El modelo teórico propone que la primera función distingue a los valores según las metas perseguidas (personales, centrales o sociales); la segunda función los diferencia según las necesidades (de supervivencia o crecimiento). La combinación de estas funciones arroja 6 valores básicos (hipótesis estructural) con valores marcadores específicos (hipótesis de contenido). Estas hipótesis fueron apoyadas en una muestra intencionada nacional amplia (N = 5.176) de estudiantes universitarios brasileños, por medio de análisis factorial confirmatorio y escalamiento multidimensional. Los valores centrales se situaron entre los valores personales y sociales y los de supervivencia y de crecimiento se separaron en 2 áreas. Engajamento escolar: explicação a partir dos valores humanos

Resumo O presente estudo objetivou conhecer em que medidas os valores humanos predizem o engajamento escolar. Participaram 338 estudantes, com idade média de 13,04 (DP=1,45), sendo a maioria do sexo masculino (52,4%), provenientes de escolas públicas (53,6%) e do nono ano do ensino fundamental (26,3%). Estes responderam à Escala de Engajamento Escolar, o Questionário de Valores Básicos e perguntas demográficas. Utilizou-se o software estatístico SPSS para a realização de análises descritivas e inferenciais. Os resultados indicaram que os alunos que priorizam valores das subfunções interativa, normativa, suprapessoal, existência e realização dedicam-se na realização da tarefa acadêmica, ao contrário daqueles que priorizam os valores da subfunção experimentação. Ademais, constatou-se que as variáveis nível de escolaridade e natureza da instituição escolar influenciaram no engajamento escolar. Os resultados evidenciam a importância dos valores em ambiente acadêmico, mostrando a necessidade do desenvolvimento de projetos que possam estimulá-los nas escolas, sobretudo àqueles de orientação central e social.

Human values and ideological beliefs as predictors of attitudes toward immigrants across 20 countries: The country‐level moderating role of threat

Immigration is a worldwide subject of interest, and studies about attitudes toward immigrants have been frequent due to immigration crises in different locations across the globe. We aimed at understanding individual‐level effects of human values and ideological beliefs (Right‐Wing Authoritarianism—RWA, and Social Dominance Orientation—SDO) on attitudes toward immigrants, and whether country‐level variables (perception of Islamic fundamentalism as a threat, perception of immigrants as a threat, and international migrant stock) moderate these relations. With representative samples from 20 countries (N = 21,362; the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania), and using Multilevel Bayesian regressions, results showed the negative effect of RWA, SDO, and existence values on attitudes toward immigrants, and the positive effects of suprapersonal and interactive values. Cross‐level interactions indicated that the effects of RWA, SDO, and suprapersonal and existence values were intensified in countries with societally high levels of perceiving Islamic fundamentalism as a threat. International migrant stock served as a country‐level moderator for the effects of SDO and RWA only. When country‐level moderators were included simultaneously, Islamic fundamentalism as a threat was the most consistent moderator. Framing theory is offered as a plausible explanation of these results.
