Food and feeding habits of king weakfish, Macrodon ancylodon (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) caught in the southern coast of Brazil (Lat. 29º to 32ºS)

Abstract: Synopsis Maenodon aneylodon was obtained from landings in Santos Port (São Paulo State) of fish caught monthly by commercial vessels~ on the southern coast of Brazil during September 1976 to August 1977. The measurements of total lenght~ total weight determination of sex and maturity stages were made. The food items found in stomach contents were: shrimp (Antem~ia longin~)~ fishes (Panalonehu~ b~ilien6~, Maenodon aneylodon, Tniehiu~ lept~, Gadidae~ Engraulidae)~ molluscs (Loliginidae~ Bivalvia) and Stomatopoda… Show more

“…However, female fishes apparently predated more intensely the intermediate hosts as observed by the significant higher values of the abundance and mean intensity of infection. In a study by Juras and Yamaguti (1985) the females presented higher values of relative frequency of stomach fullness compared to the males and immature specimens.…”

“…The high prevalence value (87.6%) indicated that the fish predated actively the intermediate invertebrate hosts. Juras and Yamaguti (1985) reported that the species consumed invertebrates actively through the year. The statistical data showed that the feeding preferences concerning the intermediate host were not different between males and females, and similar results were found by Piorski et al (2004).…”

“…ITequencyof occurrence (FO), defined as the proportion of stomachs that contained a given food item, and 2) proportional abundance (P), measured as the number of points covered by each item on a grid of points spaced 4 mm, divided by the total number of points occupied by the contents. Items were ranked using these two methods based on the Preponderance lndex (PI; Juras & Yamaguti, 1985):…”
