Objective: To evaluate the influence of obesity on pulmonary function and exercise tolerance in women with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Subjects and methods: A descriptive analytic crosssectional study was carried out. Thirty-nine (39) sedentary climacteric women, aged 45 to 60 years, were evaluated and submitted to polysomnography. The participants were divided into 4 groups: a) 'eutrophic non-OSA' (n = 13); b) 'eutrophic OSA' (n = 5); c) 'obese non-OSA' (n = 6); d) 'obese OSA' (n = 15). All subjects underwent clinical and anthropometric evaluation, followed by pulmonary function tests and 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Results: There was a significant difference in the predicted percentage values of FEV 1 /FVC when comparing 'eutrophic OSA' and 'obese OSA' (97.6% ± 6.1% vs. 105.7% ± 5.7%, respectively; p = 0.025). The other spirometric variables did not show any differences between the studied groups. There was no significant difference in the maximum distance walked when the 'eutrophic non-OSA', 'eutrophic OSA', 'obese non-OSA' and 'obese OSA' groups were compared. Conclusion: Considering the results of this study, OSA itself did not influence pulmonary function or functional capacity parameters compared to eutrophic women. However, not only isolated obesity but also obesity associated with OSA can negatively impact sleep quality and lung function.

Introdução: A obesidade é um problema de saúde pública que compromete vários parâmetros da saúde dos sujeitos, entre eles a capacidade funcional (CF).Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito da participação de mulheres em um programa de reeducação alimentar na capacidade funcional.Materiais e Métodos: Estudo de característica longitudinal retrospectiva, contou com uma amostra de 794 mulheres (48,4±12,3 anos; índice de massa corporal de 30,8±5,2 kg/m² – IMC). Os sujeitos participaram semanalmente de um programa de reeducação alimentar durante 20 semanas. A massa corporal (MC) e a prática de exercícios físicos (autorrelato) foram mensuradas semanalmente, sendo a CF (Health Assessment Questionnaire – HAQ20; escores de 0 a 3) e o perímetro abdominal avaliado ao início e final do programa. A amostra total foi dividida em subgrupos quanto ao IMC, magnitude de redução de MC, prática de exercícios físicos e idade. As variáveis foram comparadas por meio do teste de Wilcoxon (pré e pós) e o teste Mann-Whitney (entre os subgrupos; p≤0,05).Resultados: Melhora significativa da CF entre os participantes (0,17±0,31 vs 0,07±0,21; p<0,001), assim como, nos parâmetros antropométricos (MC 80,66±14,58 vs 75,48±14,03; p<0,001). Todos os subgrupos apresentaram melhora da CF no transcorrer do tempo, sendo que somente os subgrupos IMC e idade apresentaram diferenças significativas da CF entre si.Conclusão: Conclui-se que a participação de mulheres em um programa de reeducação alimentar promove uma melhora da sua CF, reduzindo vários parâmetros da composição corporal, sendo que somente a idade e o IMC apresentam influência na CF.

This study aimed to analyze the influence of a fitness program on quality of life and lung function in asthmatics. This is an experimental study in which 19 patients were randomized intervention group (n = 9) and control group (n = 10). Later they were divided by age group: patients aged 30 to 40 years and 41-60 years. The intervention group held three times a week totaling 24 sessions of 60 minutes of individual physical training and educational lectures, while the control group received only educational lectures. Quality of life was assessed using the instrument The Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire, and lung function was assessed by spirometry and chest cirtometry. There was improvement in the score of the control group's quality of life with an average age of 41-60 years and in both the intervention group. In the thoracic mobility, there was an increase of axillary and xiphoid only on average with intervention group aged 30 to 40 years. In spirometry only the control group with an average age of 41 to 60 years showed improvement in all spirometric variables. The results of this study suggest that pulmonary rehabilitation had a positive impact on the treatment of asthmatic patients, improving the quality of life, lung function and chest mobility.

Abstract: The present study showed a positive correlation between pre- and post-BDA PEFR and the distance covered in the 6MWT in obese subjects, that is, the higher the PEFR, the higher the physico-functional capacity of the individual, and consequently, the greater the distance covered.
