“…Keloids are intradermal proliferations of the cutaneous connective tissue, secondary to an abnormal skin repair process with accumulation of collagen . In sub‐Saharan Africa, the frequency of ritual practices of scarification, tattooing, and piercing coupled with the predisposition of the black skin to develop this anomaly make keloids a nightmare for sub‐Saharan Africans, particularly when these lesions are located on uncovered areas . Keloids usually cause few complications, but depending on their size, localization, and associated symptoms, they can lead to functional, esthetic, and/or psychological harm .…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Keloids share several features with hypertrophic scars, including excessive extracellular matrix deposition caused by unknown mechanisms 6 ; significant morbidity caused by itching, pain, and decreased range of motion 7 ; profoundly impacted psychosocial well-being; and impaired overall quality of life for affected patients. [7][8][9][10] Importantly, there are no real cures for either type of scar, despite the availability of multiple treatment options. [11][12][13] The fact that there are no universally accepted treatments for either keloids or hypertrophic scars underscores the heterogeneity of these debilitating lesions and indicates that the key mechanisms involved in abnormal scarring remain to be elucidated.…”

“…Some experts see it as just an aesthetic problem [57], but the quality of life of individuals with keloids is as highly affected as with psoriasis and vitiligo [58]. Itching, pain, functional disability and a stretching sensation are commonly reported by keloid carriers [45,46]. The lack of options for clinical treatment, the possibility of postoperative recurrence, and the chances for the emergence of new lesions give the patients the idea that they are suffering from a chronic disease.…”

“…The Brazilian version is called "Questionário QualiFibro/Cirurgia Plástica-UNIFESP" [46]. It is composed of questions that are divided into two scales after the scores are processed: one scale shows physical damage and the other scale analyzes the psychological damage.…”
