Pediatric hearing healthcare programs have emphasized the importance of a family centered approach, since family's participation on the early diagnosis and intervention brings better results to children 1 .In general, after a child is diagnosed with hearing impairment, the family goes through a difficult period, having to deal with strong feelings of inadequacy, anger, guilt, vulnerability and confusion 2 . Besides, the need of restructuring their roles and learning new values and skills to deal with a hearing impairment may also be a potential source of stress for the family. Parents of hearing impaired children were more stressed than those of normal hearing children and such stress occurred due to different reasons in different stages of their children's lives 3 . In two different occasions, seven to ten days apart, participants completed the PSI-SF in the formats: paper-pencil/paper-pencil (PP), paper-pencil/electronic (PE), electronic/electronic (EE) and electronic/ paper-pencil (PE). The PSI-SF has 36 statements, divided into three subscales: Parental Distress, Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction, and Difficult Child. Pearson's correlations and comparison of the PSI-SF scores within and between groups were obtained. Results: strong positive correlations were found between PSI-SF subscales and total scores in the first and second administration, for all groups. Significant differences were observed between the mean scores for the PP group (subscale "Difficult Child") and EE group (subscale "Difficult Child" and the total score). Such differences in scores, however, did not alter in any means the interpretation of the results. Participants' stress fell into normal values, for all subscales. Conclusion: the electronic format of the PSI-SF questionnaire yields similar results to the standard paper-and-pencil administration of the test. Observed stress levels were considered normal. Resumo: Estudo com objetivo de avaliar a presença de níveis de estresse geral e parental em pais de crianças e adolescentes com síndrome de Down. Trata-se de um estudo transversal e analítico, realizado em cinco Instituições que atendem pessoas com deficiência em Goiânia, Goiás. A amostra foi composta por 40 pais. Instrumentos de avaliação do estresse: Inventário de Sintomas de Estresse para Adultos de Lipp (ISSL), Parenting Stress Index Short Form (PSI/SF). Quanto à avaliação do estresse geral, por meio do ISSL: a maioria dos pais não estava estressada. Quanto à manifestação do estresse parental: o escore médio do estresse dos pais foi baixo. Entretanto, nas três subescalas e no questionário total, 35% dos pais apresentaram níveis de estresse considerado preocupante. Pais de adolescentes apresentaram escore médio mais alto do que pais de crianças, na subescala interação disfuncional genitor-criança (p=0,03). Houve maior proporção de pais de adolescentes com nível de estresse considerado preocupante (n= 54,50%, p=0,008). A comparação entre os dados socioeconômicos e o estresse parental revelou que o estresse é maior em pais com menos escolaridade. Os resultados chamam atenção para a necessidade de assistir a saúde emocional de pais de filhos com síndrome de Down, com foco para os pais de adolescentes.Palavras-chave: Pai. Síndrome de Down. Estresse. Abstract:The aim of this study is analysing the presence of worried levels of general and parental stress in parents who has children and teenagers with down´s syndrome. This is a transversal and analytic study that happened in five institutions that assist people with deficiency in Goiânia, Goiás. The sample consists of forty parents. Instruments of analyses of the stress: List of symptoms of stress to adults of LIPP (ISSL). The analyses of the general stress happened through of LIPP test: most of the parents wasn´t stressed but those who had stress were in the phase of resistance. In respect of the manifestation of the parental stress: the average level of stress of the parents was low in the three subscales and in the entire questionaire, however, 35% of the parents showed worried levels of stress. Parents of teenagers showed average level higher than the parents of children in the subscale dysfunctional interaction genitor-child. There was bigger proportion of parents of teenagers they have worried levels of stress. Comparison between the socioeconomic data and the parental stress revealed that the stress is bigger in parents who have studied a little bit. The results show that it´s necessary to help the emotional health of parents and children with down´s syndrome with the focus to the parents of teenagers.

Objective: To present the cultural adaptation and validation of the Parenting Stress Index for Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: Methodological research. For the validation, the scale was applied to 53 mothers of premature infants at the outpatient monitoring clinic of a public teaching hospital in Paraná between November 2013 and July 2014. For the data analysis, descriptive and inferential statistics were used. Results: The reliability was satisfactory for the complete scale (α=0.91) and the domains: Child domain (α=0.87) and parents' domain (α=0.88). The principal components explained 64.57% of total item variation, being 45.16% from the child's domain and 17.80% from the parents' domain. Conclusion: The scale was appropriate to assess maternal stress after hospital discharge, endorsing its use in the Brazilian context in new studies to enhance its reliability and validity. ResumoObjetivo: Apresentar a adaptação cultural e validação do instrumento Parental Stress Index para o português do Brasil. Métodos: Pesquisa metodológica com a aplicação da escala em validação à 53 mães de prematuros no ambulatório de seguimento de um hospital público de ensino no Paraná, no período de novembro de 2013 a julho de 2014. A análise de dados utilizou estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: A confiabilidade do instrumento foi satisfatória em seu conjunto (α=0,91) e em seus domínios: Domínio da criança (α=0,87) e domínio dos pais (α=0,88). Os componentes principais explicaram 64,57% da variação total dos itens, sendo 45,16% do domínio da criança e 17,80% do domínio dos pais. Conclusão: A escala mostrou-se adequada para avaliar o estresse materno após a alta hospitalar, referendando-se seu uso no contexto brasileiro em novos estudos para ampliar sua confiabilidade e validade.
