The Live Library in Hospitals Project is a strategy adopted by several health institutions for the purpose of providing hospitalized children and adolescents the reading mediation of infant-juvenile stories through professionals and volunteers capable of this function. This study aimed to find out to what extent the reading of stories strategy proposed by this project in hospitals can be a communication resource to use with hospitalized children. In order to do that, empirical data collection was carried out through the use of semi structured interviews with the reader and children above the age of seven years and observation of reading sections. The qualitative data analysis was doing it and it was verified that the reading mediation favors the dialogs and METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHThis is a descriptive and exploratory study, (9) and the answers to its inquiries were sought using the qualitative approach, due to the characteristics of the study object and the proposed objective. With the children, the effort was to find out about what kind of story they prefer, why they enjoy listening to stories, how they feel while listening to them, and what relations they establish between the story (imaginary world) and their life.Permission from the legal guardians of the children, usually parents, regarding their participation in the study was obtained after explaining about the study objective and the technique used for data collection and, upon their agreement, they were asked to sign the free and informed consent form. The same procedure was carried out with the reading mediators.To ensure the anonymity of the children participating in the study, their names were replaced with the letters A to N, followed by their age, and with the letters I (when it concerned the interview) or O (referring to observation). The mediators were identified by numbers from I to IX, also followed by I (for interview) or O (for observation).The empirical material produced from the interviews and the observation sessions was typed and organized in separate files, and an analysis was made of the stages determined by the thematic content analysis technique, i.e. pre-analysis, analysis

Este estudo objetivou investigar a acepção da vivência do processo educacional da criança hospitalizada com doença crônica, sob a ótica da família. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, realizada na clínica pediátrica de um hospital universitário. Participaram do estudo dez famílias de crianças hospitalizadas com faixa etária entre sete e 16 anos. Utilizou-se a entrevista semiestruturada e, para análise, os princípios de interpretação temática. Os resultados apontaram que as famílias sentem-se angustiadas com a situação de afastamento escolar da criança, em virtude das periódicas internações, e que, ir à escola, é um desejo revelado pelas crianças. Concluiu-se que a classe hospitalar representa uma importante estratégia de cuidado. Por meio da manutenção do processo de escolarização, a criança ressignifica sua vivência hospitalar e tem preservado seu desenvolvimento, melhorando sua autoestima e sua qualidade de vida.

DAILY LIFE FOR ADOLESCENTS WITH CHRONIC DISEASEABSTRACT: This is a qualitative study that aimed to better understand the everyday life of Brazilian adolescents with chronic disease. Data was collected between March and June of 2009 in the Pediatric In-Patient and Outpatient Units at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, involving eleven adolescent patients with chronic disease. Symbolic Interactionism was used as a theoretical reference and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Collective Subject Discourse was used to analyse the data, from which the following categories emerged: the school routine, which shows how the schooling process is changed, with the importance of participating in school and the hospital institution promoting the continuation of their education; the feeding routine, which points out dietary restrictions and the need for nutritional education as something that interferes with social relationships, experienced with grief; and school nourishment, which showed how difficult it is for these adolescents to follow their prescribed diet in this environment. La recolección de los datos se hizo en la unidad pediátrica y en la Clínica Pediátrica del Hospital Universitario de la Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, con once adolescentes con enfermedades crónicas, entre marzo y junio de 2009. Para la fundamentación teórica se empleó el Interaccionismo Simbólico, y la entrevista semi-estructurada fue utilizada para la recolección de los datos. En el análisis de los datos se utilizó el Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo. Las categorías encontradas en el estudio son: la vida cotidiana de la escuela, que muestra cómo el proceso de escolarización cambia, y la importancia de la participación de la escuela y del hospital en la promoción de la continuidad de su educación; la dieta diaria, lo que señala la necesidad de restricciones en la dieta y la educación nutricional, como algo que interfiere en las relaciones sociales, que se experimenta con sufrimiento; y, la alimentación escolar, que demuestra lo difícil que es para estos jóvenes seguir su dieta en este entorno.
