Companies have a legal and social responsibility to ensure the safety of its workers, all persons lawfully present at the workplace and the surrounding community. This requires laid down procedures and routing process which aims at identifying, eliminating, minimizing and control the work-related hazards and decrease the risks. To be effective, the Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (OSHMS) need to be integrated within the organization’s safety policy and objectives. Therefore, this explains why OSHMS has continued to play a pivotal role in the decision making process in most companies. This study aimed at assessing occupational health and safety management systems in place and their compliance. The sampling unit was petrol stations and the study employed use descriptive study design. The purposive sampling was employed to select thirty two (32) petrol stations in Njoro Molo and Nakuru Municipalities of Nakuru County with a special focus on petrol stations which have dispenser pumps, car servicing bay and Front Office section. Data was collected using purposive sampling, stratified and simple random where interviews, observations and questionnaire survey. Descriptive statistics which involved frequency tables and percentages was used to analyze the data. The findings of this study shows that more than half of the petrol stations lacked defined Occupational Safety and Management systems. There is need of Occupational Safety and Health Management System to be integrated within petrol stations policy in order to reduce the operations mistakes, costs of reducing problems and level of risks while ensuring that they comply with laws and regulations.

Small-scale industries account for a large proportion of jobs and play a vital role in most countries’ economic growth and prosperity. Due to the very low use of personal protective equipment (PPEs), employees are exposed to numerous physical, chemical, and accidental hazards in small-scale industries. PPEs are very effective in minimizing occupational injuries, accidents, and other hazards which otherwise result in substantial manpower and financial losses. The study objective was to assess the availability and use of PPEs as well as self-reported occupational exposures among workers in surveyed small industries in Jeddah. The study involved 102 workers from 28 small-scale industries (vehicle repair, welding, and paint). A survey was conducted to gather data of socio-demographic characteristics, self-reported occupational exposures, and frequency of PPEs used by workers. The occupational exposures (never exposed, sometimes exposed and always exposed) were reported in percentages including; noise exposure (19.6, 73.5 and 6.9%); dust/smoke exposure (9.8, 69.6 and 20.6%); vapors/fumes exposure (11.8, 60.8 and 27.5%); and direct sunlight (43.1, 56.9 and 0%), respectively. The reported use of different PPEs in descending order was; knee joints mats (50%), welding shields (50%), safety glasses (33.3%), gloves (27.5%), face masks (26.5%), safety shoes (10.8%) and earplugs/ muffs (8.8%). On the basis of this study findings, hand hygiene and general OSH awareness like interventions can be developed which will help in minimizing workplace exposures among small-scale industry workers.

The effects of noise on health and productivity represent environmental and occupational issues fororganizations, which can be mitigated by awareness of the importance and adoption of personal protective equipment (PPE). However, the analysis of noise levels and the use ofthesaid equipment are neglected in micro and small enterprises (MSE’s). The present study aimed to identify the relationship between noise levels and productivity in a small footwear company, in which two time studies were conducted: with and without the useof hearing protective devices. The result showed that noise levels have a negative effect on productivityand the existence of a real and significant difference in the operator’s productivity with and without the use of PPE.
