In 2009 Argentina implemented the Universal Child Allowance for Social Protection (auh), a cash transfer programme for households with children. Coverage provided by the contributory family allowance programme was extended to parents who are unemployed or who work in the informal sector (domestic workers, for example). This paper uses the difference-in-difference estimator and propensity score matching techniques to evaluate the short-term effects of the auh on adult labour participation and income generation.The results suggest that, during its first year of operation, no significant disincentives to work were generated by the programme, given that it did not discourage adults from working or lead to a reduction in the number of hours worked. These findings are highly relevant in the Latin American context where these kinds of cash transfers have become an important component of social protection systems.

This paper examines how beneficiaries of Brazil's Bolsa Família (BFP) conditional cash transfer program find employment in a Brazilian municipality, and assesses their participation in decent work. Using Belo Horizonte as a case study, researchers conducted a survey of BFP recipients. The paper compares responses of informally and formally employed workers to assess how their employment meets the criteria of the decent work agenda. Results indicate no significant difference between perceptions of formal and informal employees concerning discrimination and poor working conditions. Findings lead to recommendations about formalization of employment, coordination with existing job training programs, childcare, and transportation.

ResumoEste trabalho analisa o diferencial de salários no Brasil a partir da orientação sexual com base no Censo 2010. Não foram observados padrões sistemáticos nas estimações tanto em homens como em mulheres, mas diferenças estatisticamente significativas a favor dos casais do mesmo sexo. Destaca-se que os casais gays ganham, em média, 25,11% a mais que os casais heterossexuais, mantendo fixas suas condições de ocupação e ramos de atividade nas estimativas de MQO. No que tange às mulheres, casais de lésbicas ganham, em média, 13,84% a mais nos modelos de correção de seletividade amostral com controle de todas as características observadas.Palavras-chave: Novos Arranjos Familiares; Orientação Sexual; Censo; Diferencial de Salários. AbstractThis paper aims to analyze the wage gap according to sexual orientation by making use of the new methodology of family arrangement identification from the Brazilian Census of 2010. No systematic patterns were found on men and women regressions. However, statistically significant differences in favor of homosexuals were found on both models. It should be mentioned that gay couples earn on average 25.11% more than heterosexual couples, after controlling for occupational and the economic sector. Regarding women, lesbian couples earn on average 13.84% more than their heterosexual counterparts after controlling for the observed characteristics in a sample selection correction model.
