Photostimulable x-ray storage phosphors: a review of present understanding

Abstract: Photostimulable x-ray storage phosphors in form of image plates are a promising alternative t o conventional two-dimensional x-ray detectors. By absorption of ionizing radiation, electrons and holes are generated and captured locally to form a dose proportional latent image. The stored information is read out by scanning with a focussed HeNe laser. This leads to a local excitation of the trapped electrons which subsequently recombine with the trapped holes causing the emission of light. The information is then… Show more

“…In spite of many efforts to understand the information storage and read-out processes, no complete understanding has yet been achieved (see e.g., [2][3][4][5]). The lower spatial resolution of commercially-used X-ray imaging systems based on BaFBr is partially due to the matlockite structure of the crystallites in the storage phosphor layer.…”

“…The feeding of the Eu 2+ persistent luminescence center is similar to the storage phenomena in wide band gap semiconducting materials, e.g. Si doped by Er 3+ [46,47] and in photosimulatcd phosphors [35]. However, further studies utilizing different experimental spectroscopic and other techniques are needed to prove and reveal the details of the proposed mechanism.…”

“…Together with the photo-stimulated luminescence [35], the persistent luminescence is based on the use oflattice defects for storing the excitation energy. However, in contrast to the phenomenon of photo-stimulated luminescence which has been studied exhaustively and the materials are well established and characterized, the corresponding features of the persistent luminescence are not at all well characterized.…”

“…CR equipment is very similar to film radiography [1], and as opposed to digital radiograph (DR) uses flexible detectors, which can be bent [2] and used in panoramic exposures very similar to silver film. Another attractive property concerns the very wide exposure range, which makes imaging plates less prone to overexposure and therefore allow a wider wall thickness range to be inspected with the same exposure.…”
