Combined use of ionophore and virginiamycin for finishing Nellore steers fed high concentrate diets

Abstract: Zebu cattle fed high concentrate diets may present inconsistent performance due to the occurrence of metabolic disorders, like acidosis. The isolated use of ionophores and virginiamycin in high grain diets can improve animal performance and reduce the incidence of such disorders, but recent studies suggested that their combination may have an additive effect. Thus, 72 Nellore steers, 389 ± 15 kg initial body weight (BW), were confined and fed for 79 days to evaluate the combination of virginiamycin and salinomy… Show more

“…A higher roughage inclusion was necessary for the HMC. Greater dietary roughage level decreased DMI in another trial with Nellore steers fed diets with 9 and 27% of DM from corn silage (Nuñez et al, 2013). These authors observed that DMI, ME intake, and ADG all were lower for animals fed diets with 27% corn silage than for animals fed diets with 9% corn silage.…”

“…The responses to the administration of MON or VM alone have been widely studied and the results are consistent (Rogers et al 1995;Salinas-Chavira et al 2009, 2016Nuñez et al 2013). However, it is also necessary to understand the effects of the combination of these antimicrobial agents on performance.…”

“…Therefore, the effects of additives combination in the net energy intake have a positive impact on performance, possibly by changes in the pattern of ruminal fermentation (Nuñez et al 2013). Fonseca et al (2016) observed lower production of methane in animals that received a combination of VM and MON, which could be associated with increase in the levels of propionate and gluconeogenic precursors, improving the energetic status of this animals.…”

“…Os Ionóforos são frequentemente adicionados à dieta de confinamento para melhorar o metabolismo energético, sem danos à saúde dos animais. Entre os ionóforos, a monensina é o mais usado e melhor estudado (NUÑEZ et al, 2013).…”
