Relationship between panicle differentiation and main stem leaf number in rice genotypes and red rice biotypes

Abstract: Panicle differentiation (DP) is a key developmental stage in rice (Oryza sativa L.) because at this stage plant switches from vegetative to reproductive development and source-sink relation changes to allocate part of the photoassimilates for growing spikelets and kernels. The objective of this study was to determine the main stem Haun Stage (HS) and the number of leaves that still have to emerge until flag leaf at PD in several cultivated rice genotypes and red rice biotypes in different sowing dates. A two-y… Show more

“…The two weedy red rice biotypes, referred hereafter as YHRR (yellow-hull red rice) and BHRR (black-hull red rice), are representative of the major pool of red rice biotypes found in commercial rice fields in Rio Grande do Sul State and are tall, with broad and light green leaves, and high and early kernel shattering rates (Streck et al, 2009).…”

“…All these processes are depending on C assimilated and N availability, as reported by Lafarge and Bueno ( 2009 ) and Dingkuhn et al ( 2015 ) in rice, and by Dreccer et al ( 2008 ) in wheat. Regarding panicle size, many studies reported that panicle development, and the determination of spikelet number per panicle, is closely correlated to early plant vigor and underlying traits such as leaf appearance rate (Dong et al, 2004 ; Streck et al, 2009 ; Itoh and Shimizu, 2012 ; Rebolledo et al, 2012 ), tillering (Lafarge et al, 2002 , 2010 ; Borràs-Gelonch et al, 2012 ), culm (Fujita and Yoshida, 1984 ; Wu et al, 2011 ), and peduncle (Liu et al, 2008 ) size, plant height (Wang et al, 2014 ; Chen et al, 2015 ), or even neck internode diameter (Zhang and Yamagishi, 2010 ).…”
