Potential of the ESA23B maize population for protein and oil content improvement

Abstract: Among the traits that may add commercial value to maize (Zea mays L.), those related to nutritional quality, specially protein and oil content, are of great interest to the feed industry. The objective of this work was studying the variability of protein and oil content, as well as yield, in a group of maize testcrosses. One hundred and twenty S1 families of the ESA23B maize population were crossed with two testers, an open-pollinated population (BR108) and an exotic line (CML269). Testcrosses were evaluated a… Show more

“…Maize grain oil content showed a low level or absence of genotype by environment interaction and was influenced by the xenia effect (Lambert et al, 2004;Laurie et al, 2004;Mittelman et al, 2003). Thomison et al (2003) found that weather conditions limiting grain yield did not strongly affect the increased oil content in kernels of TC Blends.…”

“…Regarding that the grain OC and composition are not influenced by the environment Goldman et al, 1994;Lambert et al, 2004;Laurie et al, 2004;Mittelman et al, 2003), we assumed that the grain yield of ZP341 from the large strip trials in Serbia in 2013 could serve as a basis for Top-Cross simulation. This is not the case with protein and tryptophan contents which are greatly determined by environmental conditions.…”

“…The high content of unsaturated fatty acid in maize oil is the main factor in its high quality (Ozcan, 2009). Thus, increasing oleic acid in maize oil can promote its use for food and industrial purposes (Mittelmann et al, 2003;Pollak and Scott, 2005). Carotenoids are major antioxidant biomolecules in maize grain; increasing carotenoid content is one of the main objectives of bio-fortification (de Almeida Rios et al, 2014).…”

“…A qualidade nutricional vem despertando grande interesse no mercado de grãos (Mittelmann et al, 2003). Dentre os nutrientes destacam-se as fibras, que são componentes importantes da dieta humana por exercerem efeitos benéficos na saúde, auxiliando na prevenção de doenças do sistema digestivo e do coração, além de contribuirem para a redução do colesterol, no controle glicêmico e na prevenção de câncer de cólon (Hughes, 1991;Moore et al, 1998;Vanderhoof, 1998).…”
