Perennial herbaceous legumes as live soil mulches and their effects on C, N and P of the microbial biomass

Abstract: The use of living mulch with legumes is increasing but the impact of this management technique on the soil microbial pool is not well known. In this work, the effect of different live mulches was evaluated in relation to the C, N and P pools of the microbial biomass, in a Typic Alfisol of Seropédica, RJ, Brazil. The field experiment was divided in two parts: the first, consisted of treatments set in a 2 x 2 x 4 factorial combination of the following factors: live mulch species (Arachis pintoi and Macroptilium … Show more

“…The soil N is a major component of chlorophyll, responsible for photosynthesis and normal vegetative growth of a plant, besides the effective utilization of P, K. Among the green manuring, the legumes are preferred for their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and the legume residues being the biological source of N required for sustainable agriculture 17,18 …”

“…The maximum net farm income and cost benefit ratio was reported in maize inter cropped with cow pea along with nitrogen application [11][12][13] . The advantage of rapid mineralization of mulched legumes to fix the nitrogen in soil organic compounds 14 even under low soil moisture 15,16 strongly recommends green manuring [17][18][19] . Also, the legume green mulching can add soil nutrients and improves moisture retention capacity 20 and fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere 21 .…”
