Acacia mearnsii De Wild. is one of the most widely cultivated forest species in Brazil. Despite its importance, studies on breeding strategies for this species are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the progeny and develop early selection strategies for A. mearnsii. Individuals of half-sib progenies were classified according to their genotypic value and selected based on their relative performance. The additive effect was only significant for plant height. The best progenies and plants should be selected based on plant height after approximately 60 days of being in nursery and 2 years of field cultivation. This strategy eliminates the worse progenies, discards inferior genotypes in the nursery, eliminates unselected genotypes based on plant height before flowering, and intercrosses only the best plants in field cultivation. This resulted in an annual genetic gain of 3% for plant height and 2% for diameter at breast height.

ABSTRACT. The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters for Jatropha full-sib families and to select superior genotypes based on grain yield, adaptability, and stability simultaneously to be used for cloning and crossings. Grain yield was evaluated in thirteen full-sib families in a randomized block design for 5 years. The harmonic mean of the relative performance of genotypic values and reaction norm were performed to estimate the adaptability and stability, and sequentially the 30 superior individual plants were selected based on the predicted additive genotypic value for the last crop season. Families 4, 8, and 9 may be used to several regions of Brazil since they have high genotypic adaptability and stability. Individuals belonging to families 9, 8, 2, 1, 6, and 5 should be used for cloning or crossing to obtain the next-generation individuals, and consequently to continue the Jatropha breeding.

Programas de melhoramento do pinhão-manso (Jatropha curcas L.) intensificaram-se nos últimos cinco anos, tendo sido selecionadas, localmente, plantas em diversas regiões do Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a interação genótipos x ambientes da produção de grãos de pinhão-manso, avaliada em três regiões brasileiras, e o progresso genético obtido com a seleção. A partir de progênies de meios-irmãos, selecionadas pela Embrapa Semiárido e pela EPAMIG, foram instalados, no ano de 2008, três testes de progênies, nos municípios de Planaltina, DF, Nova Porteirinha, MG e Pelotas, RS, utilizando-se delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com três repetições e cinco plantas por parcela. Como testemunhas foram utilizadas sementes de plantas não selecionadas e um dos materiais genéticos comercializados no Brasil. A interação genótipo x ambiente foi significativa. Foram identificadas oito progênies de adaptabilidade geral, três progênies de baixa adaptabilidade, duas progênies de adaptabilidade específica a ambientes favoráveis e duas progêni-es de adaptabilidade específica a ambientes desfavoráveis, em diferentes regiões do Brasil. As estimativas de progresso genético indicam eficiência da seleção massal, com ganhos de 28, 76 e 177%, nos municípios de Planaltina, DF, de Nova Porteirinha, MG, e de Pelota, RS, respectivamente. Observa-se que os ganhos de seleção obtidos pelo método centroide são mais equilibrados entre ambientes e, por isso, preferíveis. As novas médias, estimadas com o plantio das progênies selecionadas, em toneladas por hectare, são de 2,34 ton.ha Adaptability and stability of Jatropha curcas L. progenies in different regions of BrazilPhysic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) breeding programs have intensified in the past five years, locally selecting plants from various Brazilian regions.
