The aim of this study was to select Coffea arabica lines with improved adaptability to tropical edaphic conditions. Competitive trials were set up at three locations of the states of Rondônia and Acre. Each trial was composed of 21 lines in the F5 generation and four reference cultivars evaluated as controls. To analyze beverage quality, six liters of coffee fruit at the M3 maturity stage was collected for each line in the environments of Alta Floresta do Oeste, RO (E1), Porto Velho, RO (E2), and Rio Branco, AC (E3). On the same day, after collection, the fruit was washed and placed to dry (natural processing) in full sun over canvas, until the samples reached 11-12% moisture. Sensory analysis of the samples was carried out by three judges/cuppers (Q Grader), according to the sensory analysis method of the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Analysis of variance showed that the effect of the genotype x environment interaction was significant, indicating differentiated performance of the lines grown in the different locations. Environments E2 and E3 were not favorable for beverage quality, whereas environment E1 showed better conditions for production of specialty coffees. Line 2 had a final score of 80, line 11 had a final score of 79, and line 12 had a final score of 77.In addition to good beverage quality, lines 2, 11 and 12 also had yields higher than 30 bags ha -1 in the average of three harvest periods, indicating the possibility of selecting lines with improved adaptation to tropical regions.

Most of the Western Amazon coffee production is made from growing unregistered clones, selected by the coffee growers themselves. The aim of this study is to evaluate the sensory profile and genetic diversity of the most cultivated Coffea canephora clones in the Western Amazon. Coffee samples at cherry stage of the clones 03, 05, 08, 25 and 66 were collected at eight municipalities in the main coffee growing zones, with altitudes ranging from 86 to 381 meters. Beverage quality was evaluated according to the Robusta Cupping Protocols and estimates of the genotype × environment interaction (GE) were made interpreting non-parametric and multivariate methods. The GE interaction was significant and the genetic component was also important to the expression of beverage quality (h 2 =82,23). The clones 25 and 05 have good attributes and mean score near 80 points. Sweetness was the sensory descriptor with the greatest impact on beverage quality of these two clones. Harshness was the descriptor that had the greatest negative impact on beverage quality of clone 66. The clones had complexities that differed and that were not necessarily associated with greater beverage quality. Despite the differences in their beverage attributes, these clones that are grown for their high productivity presented low genetic diversity of the beverage quality.

Association and mycorrhizal dependency in Jatropha curcas L.seedlings under salt stress 1 The cultivation of Jatropha curcas L. for biodiesel production is possible in salinized areas; however, biomass production is limited in these soils. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are a promising alternative for bioremediation in salinized soils. Yet, salinity also affects the AMF at the time of colonization and, in this case, the symbiosis is not always established. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test the hypotheses that three AMF species commonly found in saline soils are associated with J. curcas and if seedlings previously inoculated with these AMF are more tolerant to salt stress. Two trials were performed: the first one was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments (control, Rhizophagus intraradices, Gigaspora albida, Claroideoglomus etunicatum, and the three species together) and six repetitions to investigate the formation of symbiosis among species; and the second trial was carried out in randomized blocks in a 4 × 2 factorial scheme (2, 5, 8, and 10 dS m -1 , with and without mycorrhizae) with eight repetitions to verify the development and mycorrhizal dependency (MD) of the seedlings previously inoculated, in salinized environment. The three species of AMF are associated with J. curcas both alone and together. Mycorrhizal dependency increased with salinity, indicating that J. curcas is a facultative species. The pre-colonized seedlings with AMF are an alternative to the establishment of J. curcas in salinized soils.
