Due to high temperatures, practically all coffee farms in the state of Rondonia are of the C. canephora species. Thus, importing arabica coffee from other states becomes necessary for composition of blends, as well as for the specialty or gourmet coffee market. The purpose of this study was to select arabica coffee genotypes that exhibit satisfactory agronomic performance under high temperature conditions. The experiment was conducted in OuroPreto do Oeste, RO, Brazil, with mean annual temperature of 25.8°C and mean annual rainfall of 2300mm year-1. The experiment was composed of 114 arabica coffee genotypes, with 103 progenies and eleven control cultivars, provided by EPAMIG. A randomized block experimental design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0x1.0 meters and five plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed significant difference for the green coffee yield trait. In joint analysis, significant differences were detected among progenies and control cultivars. In the average of the four harvests, green coffee yield was 32.38 bags ha-1. The cultivars 'CatuaíVermelho IAC 15', 'Obatã IAC 1669-20' and 'Catucaí Amarelo 2SLCAK' stood out, achieving yields greater than 40 bags ha-1. The gain obtained from selection was 14.33 bags ha-1, which is equivalent to an increase of 44.04% in production of green coffee. The progeny H514-7-10-6-2-3-9 stood out with an average yield of 51.20 bags ha-1. In regard to maturation cycle, 56% of the progenies were classified as early maturity and 44% as medium maturity. In this paper, we studied coffee bean yield, maturation, and other characteristics of special progenies of Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) grown under high temperatures in a low altitude region in the state of Rondonia, Brazil. We evaluated 29 progenies developed by the Instituto Agronômico de Campinas-IAC, namely, 24 F 2 BC 2 progenies of Obatã (C. arabica with introgressions of C. canephora) x (C. eugenioides 4n x C. arabica), three F 3 progenies of Catuaí x Glaucia, and two H419 lines. Seven cultivars were used as controls. A randomized block design was used with three replications, spacing of 3.0 × 1.0 m, and ten plants per plot. All the crop seasons showed a significant difference for the hulled coffee yield trait. In combined analysis, significant difference was detected among progenies, among controls, and in the progeny vs control contrast. In the average of the four harvests, hulled coffee yield was 29.30 bags ha-1. The F 2 progeny Obatã x (Catuaí x EUG DP x MN) C.1594 stood out from the others with a mean yield of 47.37 bags ha-1. The cultivars received beverage scores from 40 to 62, "rioysh" to "hard" beverage classification, while the progenies had scores from 40 to 80, "rio" to "barely soft" beverage classification. In regard to the maturation cycle, eleven progenies were late (April), eleven intermediate (March), and seven early (February). For continuity of advancement of generations, 104 plants were selected, derived from 22 progenies with the best productive performance, late maturation cycle, and good beverage quality.

This study evaluated the use of rainfall data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) for monitoring meteorological drought in the state of São Paulo, based on rainfall data and on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Rainfall data from ECMWF were obtained from pixels corresponding to 24 meteorological stations of the state of São Paulo. The consistency of the surface data was evaluated by the following tests: Standard Normal Homogeneity Test (SNHT), Buishand and Pettitt. In order to evaluate the agreement between the surface data and the ECMWF data, for cumulative rainfall and SPI values, the following measures of accuracy were used: Willmott index of agreement (d2), modified Willmott index of agreement (d1), and mean absolute error (MAE). Higher concordances were found in the dry period (June to September). In the wet period (December to March), the ECMWF overestimated rainfall data in up to 75% of localities when compared to meteorological station data. The results indicated that the use of SPI increases the agreement between data from the ECMWF and the meteorological stations, compared to rainfall series. The highest correlations were found in the dry period leading to the conclusion that the ECMWF performs better during this period.
