In breeding programs, obtaining breeding lines was important, and first selfing selection generations is common. In addition, an analytic approach through mixed models can lead to more success in genotype selection because it lends flexibility in analysis of unbalanced data and provides more precise genotypic values in regard to progenies evaluated. The goal of this study was to make early selection (in the S 2 generation) of progenies evaluated in top crosses, using a mixed-model approach. Five hundred S 2 progenies were plant derived from three populations using selection intensity (40%), which were crossbreeding with three testers. The hybrids obtained, together with control treatments, were set up in five experiments in Brazil: three in Minas Gerais, one in Santa Catarina, and one in Paraná, which evaluated grain yield. The REML method was used for calculation of variance components, and means were predicted through BLUP. The BLUPs of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were also predicted, and the Spearman correlation coefficients among BLUPs were estimated. The dominance effects had a bigger influence on yield expression, as seen from wider amplitude in SCA values. There was an 86% coincidence considering strategy in which selection index was carried out within three populations, in relation to selection by the overall value of GCA. Considering superior hybrids, the progenies of population C exceeded the quantity of hybrids expected by 24.6%, whereas there was a reduction of 30.8% for A and 20% for B. The hybrids that exhibited the highest BLUP means were derived from crosses between progenies of population C together with the tester LE84. The low correlation among testers, both for SCA and for BLUPs, indicates that there is progeny per tester interaction.

ResumoO milho destinado à produção de espigas verdes apresenta valor de comercialização maior que o milho grão e a demanda ocorre durante todo o ano. Devido à baixa disponibilidade de cultivares específicas e a importância das informações a respeito do cultivo do milho-verde, esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar características agronômicas e de desempenho produtivo de cultivares de milho para ser colhido verde nos sistemas de produção orgânico e convencional. Os experimentos foram desenvolvidos no Pólo Regional do Extremo Oeste pertencente à Agência Paulista de Tecnologia dos Agronegócios, em Andradina-SP, durante dois anos agrícolas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 7X2, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram constituídos pela combinação de sete cultivares de milho: AG1051, AG4051, XB7116, 20A55, BM3061, 2B587 (híbridos), Cativerde 02 (variedade) e dois sistemas de cultivo (orgânico e convencional). No sistema orgânico as cultivares foram mais tardias, com menor desenvolvimento e produtividade. Destacaram-se as cultivares 2B587 e BM 3061 com número total de espigas por hectare superior em 14 e 9%, respectivamente. A cultivar 2B587 foi a mais precoce, com plantas mais baixas e BM3061 apresentou espigas com maior diâmetro e comprimento. As cultivares AG4051 e Cativerde 02 apresentaram plantas mais altas e menos produtivas tanto no sistema convencional quanto no sistema orgânico. As cultivares BM3061, 2B587, XB7116 e AG1051 podem ser recomendadas para os dois sistemas, por serem as mais produtivas em ordem decrescente. The modified recurrent selection method suggests a less productive population to test the other population more productive and itself aiming to have more genetic gains than tradition recurrent selection method that uses one population to test the other one. The objectives of this work were to estimate the genetic components, to predict and to evaluate the genetic gains of the SynFlint and Syndent populations of maize (Zea mays L.), applying a modified recurrent selection method. Two recombination cycles were carried out, with 144 S1 progeny per cycle. These progenies were test crossed with SynFlint, generating a SynFlint × Syndent inter-population and a SynFlint × SynFlint intra-population. The progenies were evaluated in five environments in the first cycle of selection and in three in the second cycle of selection, in a 12 × 12 lattice. Genetic variability in plant height and ear height, ear weight and prolificacy was observed in the first cycle of selection and in plant height and ear height in the second cycle. The intensity of selection practiced in the first cycle exhausted the genetic variability in ear weight and prolificacy. It can conclude that the two maize populations evaluated do not show adequate levels of genetic variability and predicted genetics gains estimates to allow their use in breeding programs to obtain lines and superior hybrids; and the modified recurrent selection method is inefficient to increase in population performance per se for the two populations.
