-The objective of this work was to compare phyllochron and leaf area on individual stalks of selected sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) clones grown in a subtropical environment. A two-year field experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, during the 2007/2008 and 2008 growing seasons. Three sugarcane clones were used: IAC 822045 (early), SP 711406 (median) and CB 4176 (late), in a complete randomized block design, with four replications. Expanded leaf and total leaf (tips) number were determined, and expanded leaf area was measured. The phyllochron (ºC day leaf -1 ) based on expanded and tip leaf number was estimated, using 10ºC as base temperature. Allometric relationships between individual area and number of expanded leaves were fitted. Phyllochron was analysed as a four-factor experiment: clone, growing season, phyllochron phase, and phyllochron type. The early clone had the greatest potential for growing in a subtropical climate because of higher leaf output and leaf area.

This paper explores different models of non-destructive leaf area estimates for Solanum melongela L. by the measure of leaf length (C) and blade width (L). The methodology involved eggplant cultivation in the greenhouse from March to June. Plant leaves were sampled at random throughout the growing season, totalizing 186 leaves, of which 98 were used to estimate the model parameters and 88 were used for model validation. The samples covered wide spectrum of leaf dimensions, in order to minimize root mean square error (RMSE). Leaves were sampled at 71, 79, 81, 85, 92 and 99 days after transplanting. The highest possible numbers of leaf discs were obtained with a 25mm auger. Correlations were computed between the leaf area obtained by the discs method and the linear dimensions of L and C, the product of both (CL) and the square length multiplied by the width (C Estimativa da área foliar da berinjela em função das dimensões foliares ResumoEste trabalho explora diferentes modelos não destrutivos de estimativa da área foliar de Solanum melongela L. através de medidas do comprimento (C) e largura (L) do limbo foliar. Amostraram-se folhas de plantas em momentos aleatórios totalizando 186 folhas, sendo 98 utilizadas na estimativa dos parâmetros dos modelos e 88 para sua validação. As amostragens abrangeram amplo espectro de dimensões foliares, visando minimizar a raiz do quadrado médio do erro (RQME) ) apresentaram melhores estimativas, com R 2 de 0,964 para ambos e RQME de 33,2 e 34,4, respectivamente. Com a medida apenas de uma dimensão foliar, o modelo quadrático (Y = -63,5+10,492L+0,2822L 2 ; R 2 = 0,937; RQME = 44,1) apresenta-se como alternativa, pouco afetando a precisão da estimativa..Palavras-chave: Solanum melongela L., índice de área foliar, modelagem.

Crescimento vegetativo e produtivo de duas cultivares de morango sob épocas de plantio em ambiente subtropical 1 Vegetative growth and production of two strawberry cultivars for different planting times in a subtropical environment foi blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições (parcelas de 30 plantas). Em cada parcela seis plantas foram marcadas para determinação semanal do número e área de folhas na coroa primária e massa fresca e número de frutos por planta. O modelo potência caracterizou satisfatoriamente a relação alométrica entre evolução da área foliar e número de folhas acumulado na coroa primária. A produção de frutos foi influenciada pela época de plantio, de modo que plantios no início do período recomendado pela EMBRAPA (abril) propiciam maior área foliar no início da floração e maior potencial produtivo, especialmente em anos com elevada radiação solar na primavera como foi o ano de 2008. ABSTRACT -The proper growth of leaves results in an increase in leaf area, which allows for greater interception of solar radiation, and consequently greater photosynthetic activity and better crop productivity for different planting times. The objectives of this work were to obtain equations in order to estimate leaf area from the linear dimensions of the leaf blades, to establish allometric relationships between the leaf area and the number of leaves in the primary crown, and to determine the productivity of fruits for different planting dates of two strawberry cultivars. The experiment was carried out at the experimental area of the Department of Plant Science, at the Federal University of Santa Maria, in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, with the Araza and Yvapitá cultivars. Plants were sown on six dates: 03/04/2008, 07/05/2008, 02/06/2008, 02/02/2009, 02/04/2009 and 02/06/2009. The experimental design used was of randomised blocks with four replications (plots of 30 plants each). In each plot, six plants were tagged for weekly determination of the number and area of leaves in the primary crown, and the fresh weight and number of fruits per plant. The power model satisfactorily characterised the allometric relationship between the development of the leaf area and the number of leaves accumulated in the primary crown. Fruit production was influenced by planting time, so that early planting in the period recommended by EMBRAPA (April) provides greater leaf area at the beginning of flowering, and a higher yield potential, especially in years with high solar radiation in the spring, as happened in 2008.
