Show more

“…When tissues are injured, its synthesis is required for repairs in defects, anatomical structure and functions. It is also one of the most common materials used for tissue repair because of its biological properties and ability to promote wound healing and an important component of the extracellular matrix 18 . Collagenase is an enzyme that breaks the peptide bonds of collagen.…”

“…Synthetic membranes include polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), resistant to degradation, bioinert, chemically stable, porous and flexible, and poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), which has controlled degradation [11][12][13] . Natural membranes are usually of collagen, a biomimetic composition to favor the bone repair process [14][15][16][17] , with excellent biocompatibility, variable biodegradability 7,18 and extraction sources, such as tendon, cortical bone or bovine pericardium 11,19,20 or porcine submucosa 21,22 . Resorption time of polymeric membranes range from 4 weeks to 6 months, occuring gradually so that bone formation is possible 8,23 .…”

“…More recently, biological materials have been used for the same purpose. Among these, swine small bowel submucosa [ 7 , 8 ], swine urinary bladder submucosa [ 9 ], bovine peritoneum [ 10 ], microbial cellulose membrane [ 11 ], and bovine pericardium [ 4 , 12 ] stand out. Collagen-based animal tissue has been more frequently used, associated to several conservation techniques to preserve its viability and reduce antigenicity [ 13 ].…”
