The present paper presents compulsory notifi cation data for infectious diseases and epidemiologic ones recorded at the Center for Strategic Information and Health Surveillance (CIEVS) for the period of March 2006 to April 2007. Data is presented in accordance with geographic distribution, time and risk classifi cation of the etiologic agents found, according to Ministry of Health regulations. The importance of this epidemiologic surveillance system is presented, debating the main topics required for quality improvement and information analysis. It is concluded, from the analysis of epidemiologic events and their relation to risk management, that the compulsory notifi cation system in Brazil is incomplete, irregular, delayed and, in a large percentage of cases, notifi cation cannot be completed and the agent may not be identifi ed. Quality of data varies from one region to another and from county to county within the same region. There is a high proportion of cases in which the etiologic agent is unknown and, in such cases, a high lethality is expected, establishing a high risk exposure condition for those health professionals involved in health surveillance. From these data, the study points out the need to improve the surveillance system and strengthens the idea of building maximum containment laboratories.

Expansão Urbana e seus efeitos na qualidade da água e marisco: estudo de caso em área de manguezal em Barra de Gramame, João Pessoa, PB ABSTRACTThe expansion of cities, population growth and occupation of urban spaces without planning, generate unwieldy problems. Inserted in these areas are the coastal regions, especially mangroves, which are transition zones between marine and terrestrial environments. Among the negative impacts occurring at these sites is the pollution of water bodies from the domestic sewage discharge due to the lack of basic services such as sanitation, and has a strong relationship to public health. Therefore, the study aims to assess the quality of water and shellfish (oysters) in a mangrove area using contamination indicators and using the methodology to present the negative impacts caused by uncontrolled urban sprawl. This monitoring system can be associated with urban and environmental planning with regard to management and policy actions. KEY WORDS:Urban Planning, Pollution.Sanitation, Public Health. RESUMENLa expansión de las ciudades, el crecimiento demográfico y la ocupación de los espacios urbanos sin planificación, genera problemas difíciles de manejar. Insertan en estas áreas son las regiones costeras, especialmente los manglares, que son zonas de transición entre los ambientes marinos y terrestres. Entre los impactos negativos que se producen en estos sitios es la contaminación de los cuerpos de agua de la descarga de aguas residuales domésticas debido a la falta de servicios básicos como el saneamiento, y tiene una fuerte relación con la salud pública. Por lo tanto, el estudio tiene como objetivo evaluar la calidad del agua y mariscos (ostras) en una zona de manglares a través de indicadores de contaminación y el uso de la metodología para presentar los impactos negativos causados por la expansión urbana descontrolada. Este sistema de control puede estar asociada con la planificación urbana y ambiental en relación con las acciones de gestión y de política.
