Sequential voltammetric determination of chromium, thallium, cadmium, lead, copper and antimony in saline hemodialysis concentrates using electrolyte pH gradient

Show more

“…The adsorption and reaction mechanisms of Cr species with DTPA at mercury electrodes have also been well described in the literature 35. Furthermore, Tl can also be selectively determined using the same complexing electrolyte 22. In this work, other interferences were systematically investigated.…”

“…The last step for Sequential Method II was the addition of ammonium acetate to buffer the medium at pH 4.6 for Tl determination. The use of DTPA was also necessary to eliminate interferences from the elements determined in the previous steps (mainly Pb and Cd) 22. Thus, the presence of DTPA was essential due to its complexing effect on several elements (Table 2), which allowed the determination of Tl because of its relatively low formation constant compared to the other interfering elements (e.g., Pb, Cd, Cu) analyzed in the previous proposed steps.…”

“…Ensuring the quality of dialysis water can be a challenge, since each patient is exposed to between 18,000 and 36,000 l of water per year [3], and high water quality is extremely important in order to avoid exposure of these individuals to chemical and microbial contaminants [4]. The literature reports several analytical methods for the detection of metal contaminants, with the aim of minimizing the possibility of patient exposure [5][6][7][8]. However, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reported studies concerning the detection of pharmaceutical compounds such as diuretics in the water used for dialysis.…”
