Flow injection spectrofluorimetric determination of cystine and cysteine

Show more

“…It is of interest due to the presence of a reactive thiol group as a side chain, (Demirkol et al, 2004;Helmutgmunder et al, 1990;Hunt, 1985). The thiol group involves in many control functionalization such as detoxification of heavy metals in living organisms, antioxidant capabilities of tissues and mitochondria, blood coagulation in mammals, transport across cell membranes and electrochemical sensing, (Cai et al, 2014;Cebi et al, 2017;Borase et al, 2015;Ensafi et al, 2009). L-cysteine is usually found in relatively low concentration in dietary protein which does not exceed 5% of total amino acids, (Demirkol et al, 2004;Ismail et al,2014).…”

“…Changes in Cys content in the body can be related to nervous and mental diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. [1][2][3] When exposed to air or in certain physiological conditions Cys is easily oxidized to cystine, a dimer composed of two cysteine molecules put together by S-S bond. Due to this ability of thiols group of being rapidly oxidized, cysteine presents antioxidant properties.…”

“…Due to this ability of thiols group of being rapidly oxidized, cysteine presents antioxidant properties. [1][2][3] Cys can undergo the ionization of its α-carboxyl group with pK a1 = 2.0 and α-ammonium group, with pK a2 = 8.2. 4 Cys structural formula is represented in Figure 1.…”

“…The analytical determination of this amino acid is not only important for TSD but any change in its concentration can cause diseases like HIV, cancer, sepsis, ulcerative colitis and many others (Droge and Holm, 1997) however it is also important to clinical diagnosis purpose. Methods such as spectrofluorimetry (Ensafi et al, 2009), colorimetry (Morioka and Kobayashi, 1997;Grote, 1931;Shinohara, 1935), iodimetry (Virtue and Lewis, 1934), liquid chromatography (Wang et al, 2007), electrochemistry (Mikus et al, 2003;Li et al, 2010;Damle et al, 2010) and spectrophotometry (Chrastil, 1989;Chrastil, 1990) are developed for the detection of cystine. Colorimetric methods are considered to be more appropriate, attractive and simple as compared to the sophisticated instruments applied till date.…”
