Flow-Injection Solid Phase Partial Least-Squares Spectrophotometric Simultaneous Determination of Iron, Nickel and Zinc

Abstract: IntroductionSolid phase spectrophotometry (SPS) provides effective methods to combine metal ion preconcentration and their spectrophotometric determination, by integrating the formation of colored complexes and their fixation on the surface of a solid support placed inside the measurement cell.1,2 The coupling between flow injection analysis (FIA) and SPS (FI-SPS) makes it unnecessary to reach equilibrium conditions, thus providing faster and more selective methods than those found in batch conditions. “…21 In spectrophotometric methods, complexing agents such as thiazolylazo dye have been successfully employed in simultaneous metal determinations in conjunction with chemometric methods. 22 These compounds have attracted much attention not only by virtue that they are sensitive chromogenic reagents for spectrophotometric, liquid chromatography and extraction-photometric (including solid phase, liquid-liquid and cloud point extraction) determinations of many metal ions, but also because of their fastness of colour formation and low price. 23 The significant drawback for most of these compounds and their complexes are only partly soluble or insoluble in water depending on the pH.…”

“…10 Beads made of different materials have become useful in these systems as surface media for retaining reagents/catalysts/analytes/reacting products, placed in the detection zone of a non destructive spectroscopy detector. [11][12][13][14][15][16] When the species sorbed on the solid beads cannot be appropriately eluted from them to be reused in successive measurements, bead injection spectroscopy (BIS) 17,18 methodology can be used. Beads are injected in the flow system and then the measurement is performed in the same way as a spectroscopy flow-through sensor.…”

“…De fato, as aplicações destas técnicas combinadas para o desenvolvimento de sistemas para determinações multi-paramétricos (Fernández et al, 2001;Teixeira et al, 2002) têm sido bem sucedidas. Além disso, a adaptação de novas estratégias aos sistemas de análises em fluxo (Karsten e Hitzmann, 1998) desempenha um importante papel quando o propósito é resolver problemas analíticos e não desenvolver novas metodologias (Bereton, 2000).…”
