Atmospheric levels of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde and their relationship with the vehicular fleet composition in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Show more

“…5,13 Another possible source of formaldehyde is the high flux of diesel vehicles, mainly trucks, in Leopoldo Bulhões street, next to the sampling local. A mean formaldehyde/acetaldehyde ratio of 1.7 was obtained by De Andrade et al 21 for a commercial area in Salvador, Brazil, in which the predominant traffic is diesel-fueled buses.…”

“…For diesel vehicles, formaldehyde emissions are expected to be significantly higher than acetaldehyde. The acetaldehyde/ formaldehyde ratio reported by de Andrade et al 22 for a given bus station was about 0.35. Additionally, light-duty vehicles in the parking area and circulating in the vicinity of the airport may contribute to aldehydes emissions.…”

“…Similar values were reported for a commercial mall parking lot and a business building parking lot, which may be considered a light duty vehicle signature. 22 The acetaldehyde emissions of these vehicles should contribute to increased acetaldehyde/formaldehyde ratios within the airport area.…”

“…10,28,29 Briefly, the cartridges were conditioned with acetonitrile (4 mL) and then impregnated with 3 mL of an acidic solution of 2,4-DNPH (0.3 %). After this, cartridges were dried for 5 min under a gentle stream of Ultra Pure grade nitrogen, with a 2,4-DNPH coated cartridge connected in tandem to prevent contamination during the preparation.…”

“…[7][8][9] The role of CC in the atmospheric chemistry is mainly due to the strong influence they have on the photochemical reactions, which lead to the formation of important air pollutants, such as ozone, nitric acid and peroxyacilnitrates. [10][11][12] Natural sources also contribute to the atmospheric concentrations of several CC, through biogenic emissions of some plants and photochemical oxidation of naturally emitted hydrocarbon precursors. 13 Many CC are classified as toxic air pollutants.…”
