Indigenous territories now represent over 20 % of the Brazilian Amazon. Well conserved for the most part, they play a key role in conservation and climate change mitigation, but are also undergoing drastic economic and social changes. Based on recent data, we depict current challenges and analyze what are the possible options for their sustainable development. Long abstract The overall context of Indigenous peoples in the Brazilian Amazon has changed dramatically since the 1980s. After the adoption of the 1988 constitution, large tracts of Indigenous lands have been recognized, which now cover more than 21 % of the Brazilian Amazon. Well conserved for the most part, they play a key role in deterring deforestation and in climate change mitigation, while also undergoing drastic economic and social changes. There are many factors challenging the sustainability of Indigenous territories today, including the deficient enforcement of Indigenous rights. The injunction that Indigenous peoples should protect the environment is complicating the definition of which economic activities they are entitled to develop inside their territories. The focus of this paper is to review the current situation of Indigenous territories in the Brazilian Amazon, providing historical context and pointing out current challenges and the debates surrounding their sustainability.

O artigo trata de educação escolar indígena na Aldeia de Marituba (Município de Belterra,Pará), constituída por cerca de trinta famílias que reivindicam a demarcação de suas terras,após terem sido praticamente expulsas de onde moravam durante a criação da FlorestaNacional do Tapajós. Considerando que a Constituição Federal, a LDB e vários outrosdispositivos legais garantem a educação diferenciada para os indígenas, buscou-se entendera concretização deste direito para um grupo que precisou recriar sua identidade, apósdécadas de quase total integração com a cultura não indígena, num processo intencional deaculturação dos indígenas à vida regional. Na luta pela permanência em suas terras, osmembros da comunidade tiveram outros aprendizados, entre os quais o de que poderiamser reconhecidos como indígenas, tais como seus antepassados da etnia Munduruku. Apesquisa foi realizada a partir de visitas in loco, quando se realizaram rodas de conversacom membros da comunidade e, depois, aplicação de um instrumento de coleta deinformações mais específicas para os alunos indígenas. Os resultados demonstram que aescola existente, apesar de considerada indígena pela Secretaria Municipal de Educação epela Secretaria Estadual de Educação, de fato não atende aos requisitos essenciais quecaracterizam esta modalidade de ensino.

Byrsonima crassifolia and B. coccolobifolia, popularly known as mirixis, muricis, mantecos or nances, are common fruit species in the Amazonian savannas. Their fruits are used in the preparation of juices and other beverages, while the other parts of the plants are used for different purposes in some indigenous communities. The aim of the present ethnobotanical study was to investigate the knowledge and traditional uses of mirixis in the Darora Indigenous Community, of the Makuxi ethnicity, in the São Marcos Indigenous Land, state of Roraima, northern Brazil. The knowledge on these species among the residents was analyzed considering their gender and age. A survey was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews with 60 respondents (36 men and 24 women), between 18 and 84 years of age. Data from the interviewees was compared between genders and two age groups (< 40 and ≥ 40 years of age). Ethnobotanical indices (Informant diversity value; Informant equability value) were calculated, and no significant differences were found in the diversity of uses between genders (U = 283.0000, p > 0.05) and age groups (U = 359.5000, p > 0.05), indicating that the knowledge on the species is evenly distributed among residents. Results show that both species are used for different purposes in the food, fuelwood and medicinal categories in the Darora Community, and this knowledge is widely shared among adult men and women of all ages.
