Evaluation of the risk for pressure ulcers in bedridden elderly at home

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the risk for pressure ulcers in elderly in their homes, after a period of hospitalization. Methods: A longitudinal prospective study conducted in the homes of 40 elderly identified with risk for pressure ulcer (PU) at hospital discharge, using the Braden Scale. The monitoring was conducted over four home visits, in the period between June and August of 2010, in Fortaleza (CE) and its metropolitan region. “…Literature findings demonstrate that the elderly are the most prone to the development of PU, due to decreased skin elasticity, insufficient skin hydration, and changes in sensitivity, as well as other factors that may be aggravated when associated to chronic diseases (13) . A higher occurrence of PU in men and white individuals occurred, which corroborates the study of Blanes et al (14) ; however, these variables are still controversial in the literature.…”

“…The Braden Scale included six parameters: sensory perception, moisture, activity and mobility, nutrition, friction and shearing. Each parameter is assigned a score ranging from 1 to 4, in total the score ranges are: risk (> 16), moderate risk (12)(13)(14)(15)(16), and high-risk (≤ 11). Thus, lower values indicate the worst conditions (10) .…”

“…In addition to other peculiarities of the elderly, such as impaired mobility, altered cognitive pattern and comorbidities. These characteristics make the elderly person more susceptible to cardiovascular diseases, besides causing implications and prolonged hospitalizations (BUSO et al, 2016;MORAES et al, 2012).…”

“…The appearance of skin lesions has been used to assess the quality of care provision, and facilities that prevent are more highly recognized than those that treat (19) . One of the risk factors for the appearance of lesions is old age (20) . Moreover, chronic-degenerative diseases, physical limitations, sarcopenia, malnutrition, frailty, disability and dependency are elements that can lead to patients being bedridden, making them even more susceptible to skin problems.…”
