Abstract: Objectives:To evaluate the efficacy of two types of dressings used on central venous catheter (CVC) in patients undergoing hemodialysis and to determine the rate of local and systemic bacterial infection when using gauze and micropore dressings or transparent film dressings. Methods: This study was a controlled randomized clinical trial with 66 subjects who were equally assigned to two groups (33 subjects per group). Group 1 used gauze and micropore dressings and group 2 used transparent film dressings. Measur… Show more

“…The results of this study are in line with the Rondomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design study conducted by Barros et al (2009) with a study subject of 66 hemodialysis patients at Sao Paulo Dialysis Unitat Hospital in September 2007-June 2008 which was divided into two groups, the control group and intervention groups (33 subjects per group). The control group was given a dressing in the CVC insertion area with gauze and micropore and the intervention group used transparent film dressing.…”

“…Considering the total number (n=21) of catheters used during the research, 9.5% of the subjects developed blood stream infections as a complication. In a randomized clinical trial performed with 66 catheters, whose objective was to assess the effectiveness of tape and gauze and transparent film covering central venous catheters, a global infection rate of 10.6% was found, with 12.1% of cases in the transparent film group (11) . In the present study, the use of antimicrobials was observed in 100% of the cases, which is expected, considering the seriousness and clinical complexity of the studied population.…”

“…Authors stated that the prophylactic use of antimicrobials does not determine decreased catheter infection rates (12) , and the use of antimicrobials concomitantly to the CVC is a risk factor for infections (13) . Studies evidenced that the microorganism most commonly associated with catheter-related blood stream infection is Staphylococcus aureus (11) . In the present study, most catheters presented Staphylococcus epidermidis colonization.…”
