OBJECTIVETo identify the spatial distribution patterns and areas of higher risk of preventable perinatal mortality in the city of Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil.METHODSWe carried out a spatial aggregated study in 2007, considering the weighting areas (census tracts contiguous sets) of Salvador, of which the center and north present low life conditions. Data were obtained from national vital statistics systems and the 2010 Census. Addresses of live births and stillbirths were geocoded by weighting area. The spatial distribution of the perinatal mortality rate was analyzed from thematic maps. Spatial dependence was evaluated by the Global and Local Geary’s and Moran’s Indexes.RESULTSCrude and smoothed perinatal mortality rates were high in areas situated to the north, west, and in center of Salvador. The smoothed rates in weighting areas ranged from 4.9/1,000 to 22.3/1,000 births. Of all perinatal deaths, 92.1% could have been prevented. We identified spatial dependence for preventable perinatal mortality for care in pregnancy, with neighboring areas with high risk in the north of the city.CONCLUSIONSThe preventability potential of perinatal mortality was high in Salvador, in 2007. The spatial distribution pattern with higher rates in disadvantaged areas of the city suggests the existence of social inequalities in health. The characteristics of the process of urban development of Salvador, which has inadequate prenatal care, possibly influenced the magnitude and spatial distribution pattern of this mortality.

This paper analyses the oceanic character of Luanda's contemporary urbanism as a way of undoing continental entrapments in the study of cities. Tracing the lineage of an urban development initiative in the Angolan capital back to Brazil's Salvador da Bahia, the paper provides a look into how a Brazilian construction company turned to real estate to forge, export, and implement a distinctive mode of being and becoming urban across the Southern Atlantic. In doing this, the paper also makes emphatic the critical role played by oil extraction in the devising of urban development strategies on both sides of the Atlantic, which then opens up an enquiry into the direct and profound impact that sugar and slavery had in the making of Salvador. By seeing Luanda from Salvador, the aim of this paper is to flesh out enduring features of what is presented as a form of Southern Atlantic urbanism. Resumo: Este artigo analisa o car ater oceânico do urbanismo contemporâneo de Luanda por forma a dissipar predisposic ßões continentais no estudo das cidades. Trac ßando a linhagem de uma iniciativa de desenvolvimento urbano levada a cabo na capital angolana at e Salvador da Bahia, analisa-se o modo como uma construtora brasileira se voltou para o setor imobili ario para forjar, exportar e implementar um modo distinto de ser e tornar-se urbano atrav es do Atlântico Sul. Este artigo se propõe a discutir os impactos do processo de globalização sobre as grandes metrópoles brasileiras com base em uma análise comparativa da trajetória recente de São Paulo e Salvador, que oferece ricos elementos para essa discussão. Partindo da literatura atual sobre esse tema, ele analisa até que ponto os fenômenos associados ao referido processo estariam levando a maiores transformações na estrutura social e urbana dessas aglomerações. Constata, com esta análise, que elas apresentam certa estabilidade ao lado de algumas mudanças, cuja diversidade e complexidade não vêm sendo contempladas pelas formulações teóricas mais correntes. À partir de la littérature actuelle concernant ce sujet, on examine dans quelle mesure les phénomènes associés à ce processus mèneraient à de plus amples transformations au sein de la structure sociale et urbaine de ces agglomérations. Grâce à cette analyse, on en arrive à la constatation qu’elles présentent une certaine stabilité à côté des quelques changements dont la diversité et la complexité ne sont pas prises en considération dans les formulations théoriques les plus courantes.
