Copaiba oil effect on induced fecal peritonitis in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the effects of copaiba oil as a prophylactic and/or therapeutic substance on survival of rats subjected to cecal ligation and puncture, describing histopathological and oxidative stress findings. METHODS: Forty rats (Ratus RESULTS:Survival analysis demonstrated that animals treated with copaiba oil prior to the execution of the CLP (PreG and Pre/Post groups) had longer survival compared to the sepsis group (p<0.0001) whereas animals receiving copaiba only after the completion of CLP (PostG… Show more

“…The CLP model of sepsis has been a mainstay of basic sepsis research; Some medicinal plants have been tested in that model [9,[18][19][20][21], most with encouraging result; however, the aloe has been used therapeutically for many centuries and has the advantage of clinical studies demonstrating its safety and effectiveness in several diseases [22][23][24], facilitating the translation. However, more studies are necessary to assess variables of drug administration such as: the best routes of administration (oral, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal or intravenous) and dose and frequency of administration for better results [18,19].…”

“…The animals were divided into the following groups: Control: the rats were anesthetized with an injection of 50 mg/kg of intraperitoneal sodium thiopental and submitted to laparotomy for cecum manipulation with no puncture. ; Sepsis: The rats were anesthetized with an injection of 50 mg/kg of intraperitoneal sodium thiopental and submitted to laparotomy and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) (11) . The procedure involved a single puncture in the cecum with a 40 x 12 mm needle.…”

“…The bowel is sensitive to ischemia because of its high metabolic activity 19 ; resulting in worsening of wound healing after anastomoses 5.7 , increased fistulas tax, and difficulty in adequate nutrients’ absorption, causing malnutrition, anemia and diarrhea. It is one of the main sources of bacteria causing sepsis, which happens with the breakdown of the intestinal barrier allowing wide bacterial translocation 17 .…”

“…This oil was tested on colitis induced 20 by acetic acid in rats and had a positive anti-inflammatory effect. In addition, in a study evaluating the effects of it on abdominal sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture 17 , there was an increase in overall survival with a lower degree of lung injury and lower levels of oxidative stress.…”
