Potential chemoprotective effects of green propolis, L-lysine and celecoxib on bone marrow cells and peripheral blood lymphocytes of Wistar rats subjected to bladder chemical carcinogenesis

Abstract: PURPOSE:To evaluate the genotoxicity of propolis and L-lysine, as well as their effects on the possible cellular damage in erythroblasts (bone marrow) and leukocytes (peripheral blood) caused by the carcinogen BBN (n -butyl -n {4 -hydroxybutyl} nitrosamine) in rats subjected to bladder carcinogenesis and treated with green propolis and L-lysine. METHODS:One hundred and twenty five rats were distributed into the following groups: I, IIA, IIB, III, K, L M N, X, XI, XII and XIII. Groups I to X received BBN in dri… Show more

“…Various authors have reported the inhibitory effect of celecoxib on ACF 6 . The inhibition and reduction of COX-2, NFkβ and interleukins in rats and the protection of bone marrow cells subjected to chemical carcinogenesis in different organs have been observed by various authors 7,8 .…”

“…Hence, although L -lysine has a (non-genotoxic) promoter action on bladder carcinogenesis, is not genotoxic to leukocytes from bone marrow or peripheral blood at doses tested in animals. ( 6 , 31 )…”

“…Propolis (bee glue), a bee-metabolized resinous mixture of Nidus Vespae , has been used as a healing agent since ancient times because of various biological effects, which were validated to be antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, dermatoprotective, antiallergic, laxative, immunomodulatory, and anticancer [ 28 , 29 ]. Recently, it has been suggested as a potential source of adjuvant drugs for bladder cancer treatment because of the cytotoxicity in human superficial bladder cancer cells, antiangiogenic effects in rat bladder cancer, and chemopreventive effects against bladder chemical carcinogenesis [ 30 32 ]. Therefore, our outstanding clinical cases showing UBC regression or recurrence prevention are successful examples of a multitarget therapeutic strategy, both internally and externally, which exhibits the synergistic efficiency of multiextract combinations used presently in KM.…”
