Electro-acupuncture reduces the need for additional anesthetics in experimental studies

Abstract: Both the AC and the EAC10/100 prolong the anesthetic effect of the combination Ketamine-xylazine in rats, allowing longer duration of anesthesia with a lower dose of anesthetic, thereby reducing the occurrence of complications.

“…Many papers have demonstrated the effects of MA and EA on ST-36 acupoint in attenuating oxidative stress in different experimental diseases [5][6][7][8][9] . Furthermore, the use of ketamine+xylazine, an anesthetic mixture often used in experimental studies may induce some degree of oxidative stress in a health animal [12][13] . It has been previously shown that large amounts of endogenous opioid peptides are secreted from the adrenal glands when CV-12 acupoints are stimulated using acupuncture with 2Hz 14 .…”

“…21 Other anaesthetics Both acupuncture and EA prolong the anaesthetic effect of the ketamine-xylazine combination in rats, allowing a longer duration of anaesthesia with a lower dose of anaesthetic. 22 Rosted and colleagues 23,24 observed that the onset of a local anaesthetic was quicker if segmentally administered acupuncture was given before a regional inferior dental block. The faster onset of local anaesthetics may be as a result of increased local blood flow after acupuncture.…”

“…After different time intervals blood samples were collected in order to evaluate the levels of ibuprofen. Blood was collected by punctioning the abdominal aorta under anesthesia with xylazine (10 mg/kg) and ketamine (90 mg/kg) given intraperitoneally (Silva et al, 2010). The samples were transferred to heparinized tubes and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for ten minutes (Nova Técnica centrifuge, model NT812).…”
