Introduction: Expiratory flow increase is a maneuver of respiratory physical therapy that promotes flow direction to the upper airways however, when applied in newborns, it may result in changes of thoracoabdominal mobility. Objective: To evaluate the thoracoabdominal mobility by photogrammetry in newborns after expiratory flow increase technique. Methods: Experimental blind study performed with newborns in supine position on a support table with upper limbs flexed, abducted and externally rotated and hip flexed at 110°. Adhesive markers were allocated for geometric delimitation of the thoracoabdominal compartment and expiratory flow increase technique was performed for 5 minutes with the therapist's hands on the thorax and abdomen. Newborns were filmed before and after the maneuver and the frames were analyzed in AutoCAD ® software by a blinded investigator at the time of the procedure. The largest and the smallest thoracoabdominal area were expressed in cm 2 and the mean values were compared between two moments (pre and post maneuver) by paired t test. Results: Twenty newborns with a mean age of 39 weeks were included. Introdução: A prematuridade é considerada um problema de saúde pública, e, nas Unidades de Terapia Intensiva Neonatais, a fisioterapia atua prevenindo e tratando complicações respiratórias e neurológicas. Objetivos: Verificar a atuação da fisioterapia na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal, perfil das mães e dos prematuros, morbidades respiratórias e neurológicas. Material e métodos: Estudo observacional de coorte retrospectivo, realizado no ano de 2008, que utilizou uma análise estatística descritiva dos dados, com média e desvio padrão. Resultados: Dos 172 prontuários analisados, verificou-se que a idade média das mães foi de 24 ± 7 anos, 81% realizou pré-natal, sendo 21% com 6 ou mais consultas. Com relação aos recém-nascidos, 58% eram do sexo feminino, 44% apresentaram morbidades respiratórias e 24% neurológicas. O atendimento fisioterapêutico foi realizado em 63% dos mesmos, as técnicas mais utilizadas foram o reequilíbrio toracoabdominal em 100% e a estimulação sensório-motora em 97%. Conclusão: A fisioterapia foi realizada na maioria dos recém-nascidos internados, havendo associação entre as técnicas respiratórias e motoras, demonstrando que, como o nascimento prematuro representa uma das causas de morbidades infantis, a atuação fisioterapêutica tem se tornado cada vez mais necessária.Palavras-chave: prematuro, fisioterapia, terapia intensiva neonatal, saúde pública.

Introduction: Many strategies to improve services for physiotherapy are based on patient's satisfaction. Listen and observe the behavior of patients in a hospital is crucial to understanding and improvement of service and the hospital.Objective: This study aimed to identify the perception of patients undergoing cardiac surgery on the physical therapy service provided to wards of hospitals for heart surgery reference in the city of Maceió, AL, Brazil, and from that information detect what actions are perceived as priorities for which are noteworthy plans for improvements in quality of care.Methods: Descriptive transverse study, conducted in quality and quantity of reference hospitals in cardiac surgery in the city of Maceio, AL, Brazil, in the period from September to November 2008. There were 30 patients in the study included users of the Sistema Único de Saúde, of which 12 (40%) female and 18 (60%) males. The average age of this sample was 49.2 ± 11.9 years and most belonged to socioeconomic class D (36.7%).Results: It was found that only 16.7% had contact with the physiotherapist before surgery. Regarding educational guidelines about post-operatively, only 2.9% patients reported having received them. However, 56.8% rated the care as good and 100% of patients reported believing that the treatment could improve their physical therapy health status.Conclusion: We suggest the implementation of protocols preoperative physical therapy with preventive measures and educational as well as new activities that may characterize the population of users of health plans/private. Ouvir e observar o comportamento dos pacientes dentro de um hospital é fundamental para a compreensão e melhoria do serviço e ambiente hospitalar.Objetivo: O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar a percepção dos pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca acerca do serviço de fisioterapia prestado nas enfermarias dos hospitais de referência em cirurgia cardíaca na cidade de Maceió, AL, Brasil e, a partir dessas informações, detectar quais ações são percebidas como prioritárias para que sejam traçados planos de melhorias da qualidade do atendimento.Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo transversal e quantitativo, realizado nos hospitais de referência em cirurgia cardíaca na cidade de Maceió, AL, Brasil, no período de setembro a novembro de 2008. Foram incluídos no estudo 30 pacientes usuários do Sistema Único de Saúde, sendo 12 (40%) do gênero feminino e 18 (60%) do gênero masculino.
