Marine natural products: chemical and biological potential of seaweeds and their endophytic fungi

Abstract: Marine natural products have currently been recognized as the most promising source of bioactive substances for drug discovery research. In this review, extraordinary metabolites from marine algae species are illustrated, as well as approaches for their isolation and determination of their biological properties and pharmaceutical potential. Furthermore, marine endophytic microorganisms (from marine algae) are presented as a new subject for extensive investigation to find novel natural products, which make them… Show more

“…Bromophenols (C 6 H 5 BrO) are present as impurities in synthetic chemicals 54 and are produced by marine algae 26 and bacteria 55 . They have been detected in a variety of marine organisms, including polychaetes, sponges, bryozoans, and fishes 26,56 , and are of interest due to their antioxidant and anticancer properties 57 . Tribromophenol and 2,4,6tribromo anisole (p. 98 and 96), a closely related structural homolog, were also detected in our samples (Table 2).…”

“…Combining the particulars of the marine environment and microbial versatility, marine microorganisms have been considered as a new frontier for finding novel pharmaceutical candidates [40]. According to the "one strain, many compounds" concept, different culture conditions result in the chemical diversity of the compounds [41].…”

“…grow in the lower subtidal zone, attached to the sand substrate or broken rock or on mangrove roots or mangrove branches that are broken and stuck in the mud. The percentage of the existence of this algae is only around 13% of all types of algae that grow naturally [2]. Caulerpa lentillifera has advantages as a functional food because of its high nutritional composition [3].…”
