Show more

“…Most cases of FBA occur in males under 3 years of age, as described in this study and in many other international (6,9,(10)(11)(12)(13) and national (2,5,14) studies. This is probably due to the developmental characteristics in this age bracket, as well as to the more adventurous and impulsive nature of young boys.…”

“…(4) In Brazil, FBA is the third leading cause of accidents that result in death. (5) In children, FBA is associated with the failure in the laryngeal closure reflex, inadequate swallowing reflex and the habit of putting objects in the mouth. Parental negligence and lack of information regarding certain objects that might be aspirated, such as small toys and certain types of food, are predisposing factors.…”

“…(17) Age under three years was predominant in relation to the other age brackets, which is in accordance with what has previously been observed in Brazil and in other countries. (1,5,7,18,19) This fact is explained by the natural tendency children have to put anything within reach into their mouth, which is a part of their natural development, together with anatomical characteristics inherent to the airways and to the immaturity of the protective cough reflex. (20) Likewise, the predominance of male patients can be explained by the fact that boys are typically more curious and adventurous.…”

“…(1,2) Occurring principally in the three first months of life, FBA is influenced by socioeconomic, cultural and educational factors, which determine the frequency and particularities of the foreign body aspirated. (3)(4)(5)(6) The most common complications include inflammation, laryngospasm, chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. (7) Serious complications, such as severe airway obstruction and death, tend to occur in young children due to the small caliber of their airways.…”
