Abstract:In this study we recorded the occurrence of insect galls, inductors and parasitoids in plants of several physiognomies of Brazilian Cerrado in the Serra dos Pireneus, Goiás State, Brazil. We found 62 morphotypes of gall on 28 botanical families, comprising 44 genera and 51 species. The plant families that showed the greatest richness of galls were Fabaceae, with eight morphotypes, and Styracaceae with six. Styrax pohlii (Styracaceae) was the host plant species with the greatest gall richness, featuring five morphotypes. Most of galls occurred on the leaves (82.6%), 45.1% in vegetation of typical savanna and 35.4% in rocky savanna. Dipteran, Hemipteran and Lepidopteran galls were found, being 50.9% of them induced by Cecidomyiidae (Diptera). Several parasitoids were obtained, Eulophidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) was the most representative group (occurring in approximately 40% of the galls). Nine species of plants were recorded for the first time in the Neotropical as host of gallers. Resumo: Neste estudo, registramos a ocorrência de galhas, galhadores e parasitóides em plantas de várias fitofisionomias de Cerrado na Serra dos Pireneus, Estado de Goiás, Brasil. Foram encontrados 62 morfotipos de galhas em 28 famílias botânicas, compreendendo 44 gêneros e 51 espécies. As famílias botânicas que apresentaram maior riqueza de galhas foram Fabaceae, com oito morfotipos e Styracaceae com seis. Styrax pohlii (Styracaceae) foi a espécie de planta hospedeira mais rica em galhas, apresentando cinco morfotipos. A maioria das galhas ocorreu nas folhas (82,6%) e em fitofisionomias de cerrado típico (45,1%) e cerrado rupestre (35,4%). Galhas de Diptera, Hemiptera e Lepidoptera foram encontradas, sendo 50,9% induzidas por Cecidomyiidae (Diptera). Vários parasitóides obtidos, dentre eles, Eulophidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) foram foi o grupo mais representativo (ocorrendo em aproximadamente 40% das galhas). Nove espécies de plantas são registradas pela primeira vez na região Neotropical como hospedeiras de galhadores. Three sites of Itamonte (Minas Gerais) were investigated for insect galls from September, 2011 to July, 2012, seasonally. One-hundred and one morphotypes of insect galls were recorded on 63 species of host plant (45 genera and 23 families). Melastomataceae was the most galled plant family, followed by Asteraceae and Myrtaceae. Galls were recorded on leaves, stems, buds, and aerial roots. Leaves were the most galled plant organ. The gall morphotypes were characterized according to their shape, color, pubescence, and number of internal chambers. Globose and fusiform galls were the most frequent. The majority was glabrous and one-chambered. The gallers comprised three insect orders: Diptera (Cecidomyiidae and Tephritidae), Hemiptera, and Lepidoptera. Cecidomyiidae were the most frequent galling taxa. Parasitoids (Hymenoptera) were obtained from six morphotypes (ca. 6% of the total). The results are compared to those of other Brazilian insect gall inventories. As there is no previous gall inventory in Itamonte, all records presented here are new.

ABSTRACT. We investigated the insect gall distribution along savanna (xeric) and forest (mesic) vegetation in the Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Goiás, Brazil. We tested if the insect gall diversity is higher in the xeric vegetation than in the mesic vegetation, as predicted by the hygrothermal stress hypothesis. The insect gall fauna was surveyed between December 2009 and June 2010 in two transects established each vegetation type. In total we found 186 insect gall morphotypes, distributed on 35 botanical families and 61 plant species. Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) induced the most insect galls (34.1%), and the plant family Fabaceae had the greatest richness of insect gall morphotypes (18). We recorded 99 insect gall morphotypes in the forest and 87 morphotypes in the savanna vegetation, being that none insect gall morphotype occurred in both habitats. We found that the insect gall richness and abundance did not diff er between forest and savanna transects. On the other hand, the estimated insect gall richness was higher in the forest than in the savanna. Our fi ndings contrary the hygrothermal stress hypothesis possibly because forest habitats have higher plant architecture complexity and occurrence of super-host taxa than the savanna habitats.KEYWORDS. Foi inventariada a distribuição de galhas de insetos ao longo de vegetações savânicas (xéricas) e fl orestais (mésicas) na Floresta Nacional de Silvânia, Goiás, Brasil. O estudo testou se a diversidade de insetos galhadores é maior na vegetação xérica do que na vegetação mésica, como predito pela hipótese do estresse higrotermal. A fauna de galhadores foi amostrada entre dezembro de 2009 e junho de 2010 em dois transectos estabelecidos em cada tipo de vegetação. No total foram encontrados 186 morfotipos de galhas de insetos, distribuídos em 35 famílias e 61 espécies de plantas. Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) induziu a maioria das galhas de insetos (34,1%) e a família Fabaceae teve a maior riqueza de morfotipos de galhas (18). Foram registrados 99 morfotipos de galhas de insetos na fl oresta e 87 morfotipos no cerrado, sendo que nenhum morfotipo de galha ocorreu em ambos os habitats. A riqueza e a abundância de galhas de insetos não diferiram entre os transectos de fl oresta e cerrado. Por outro lado, a riqueza estimada de galhas de insetos foi maior na fl oresta do que no cerrado. Esses resultados contrariam a hipótese do estresse higrotermal possivelmente devido aos habitats fl orestais apresentarem maior complexidade arquitetônica das plantas e ocorrência de táxons super-hospedeiros do que os hábitats savânicos.PALAVRAS-CHAVE.
