The Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (PESP) harbors some unusual fragments of mixed needle-broadleaved forest (MNF) of Minas Gerais state. This study aims to analyze the floristic composition and geographic distribution of the genera represented in the MNF of the PESP. Collections of fertile specimens of vascular plants (excluding epiphytes) were conducted monthly (March 2012-June 2013) in the alluvial and slope areas of MNF in the PESP, in altitudes ranging from 1,650-2,000 m above sea level. The genera were classified into seven phytogeographic groups that were delimited according to their current diversity centers available in the literature. We recorded 310 species belonging to 168 genera and 82 families of vascular plants. The richest families were Asteraceae (49 species), Melastomataceae (33 species) and Rubiaceae (16 species). We observed the presence of species often found in montane and high montane forests of southeastern region, besides of temperate genera, showing that low temperatures caused by high altitude influence the floristic composition of the area. The high richness found denotes the importance of altitude areas for diversity in Atlantic Forest and highlights the biogeographic importance of the region for presenting an unusual phytophysiognomy in the state with endemic and endangered species.

ResumoMorfoanatomia da plântula e comparação da folha nas fases juvenis e adulta de Piptocarpha angustifolia (Asteraceae). O estudo morfológico nas primeiras fases de desenvolvimento permite a observação de estruturas transitórias, que desaparecem com a passagem para a fase adulta. O estudo da morfoanatomia da plântula e das fases juvenis e adulta de Piptocarpha angustifolia foi realizado com o objetivo de se levantar características diagnósticas da espécie, principalmente nos estágios iniciais de desenvolvimento. P. angustifolia é espécie arbórea que ocorre exclusivamente na Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana. As amostras foram coletadas e fixadas em FAA 50 a partir de plantas cultivadas (13 e 35 dias após germinação) e folhas de indivíduos jovens e adultos no campo. Os caracteres como os tipos de germinação (fanerocotiledonar e epígea) e a morfologia foliar permitem o reconhecimento das plântulas e plantas jovens na mata. Os caracteres estruturais que podem auxiliar no reconhecimento da espécie são: região de transição raiz/caule; nó cotiledonar trilacunar; nó unilacunar do eofilo; presença de hidatódios no eofilo; variação do número de feixes vasculares no pecíolo e nervura mediana nos tipos foliares; dorsiventralidade e a variação no formato e número de células do mesofilo dos cotilédones, eofilos e metafilos. Morphology studies of the first development stages of plants allow the observation of transitory structures that disappear when they become mature. The aim of this study is to analyse the morphological and anatomical aspect of the structure of Piptocarpha angustifolia, in seendling, juvenile and adult stages, in order to get up diagnostic characteristics of the species, especially in the early stages of development. P. Angustifolia is a native arboreous species from Mixed Ombrophylous Mountain Forest. Samples were collected and fixed in FAA 50 from cultivated plants (13 and 35 days after germination) and leaves of juvenile and adults stages in the field. The characters as types of germination (phanerocotylar and epigeal) and leaf morphology allow the recognition of seedlings and saplings in the forest. The structural characters that can aid in the recognition of the species are: the root/stem transition zone; the trilacunar cotyledon node; the unilacunar eophyll node; the presence of hydathodes in eophyll; the variation in the number of vascular bundles in the petiole and midrib checked in leaf types; the variation in shape and number of mesophyll cells of cotyledons, and eophylls metaphylls.

-(Diversity and structure of the lower strata in two successional stages in a subtropical forest, Southern Brazil). Currently, in Paraná State, forest remnants in advanced successional stages account for less than 1% of its original area. This study compared the understory community across different successional stages of the Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil. Forest remnants, one in intermediate and another in advanced stage of natural regeneration were selected, and a total of 38 plots of 5 × 5 m were sampled. Individuals reaching at least 2 m high or having circumference up to 15 cm at height 1.3 m above the soil surface were measured and identified. In the forest at an intermediate stage, 68 species were recorded being mostly light-dependent, with Nectandra megapotamica as the most important species. On the other hand, at an advanced stage, less species were found (52 species) but most individuals were shade-tolerant, with Rudgea jasminoides as the most important species. These differences are most probably caused because of the canopy density of each fragment. As the comparison with other studies is impaired due to different plot sizes and inclusion criteria, we suggest the standardization to improve knowledge and support biodiversity conservation of the southern tropical forest of Brazil. Atualmente, os remanescentes em estágio avançado de sucessão no Estado do Paraná somam menos de 1% de sua área original. Este trabalho comparou a composição e estrutura da comunidade de sub-bosque em diferentes estágios sucessionais de Floresta Ombrófila Mista. Foram selecionados dois remanescentes florestais, um em estágio médio e outro em estágio avançado de regeneração natural, onde foram amostradas 38 parcelas de 5 × 5 m. Foram mensurados indivíduos com altura superior a 2 m e perímetro a 1,30 m de altura do solo ≤ 15 cm. Na área em estágio médio foram registradas 68 espécies, representadas por espécies secundárias com exigência de luz, destacando-se Nectandra megapotamica com os maiores valores de importância. Para área em estágio avançado foram registradas 52 espécies representadas por indivíduos tardios tolerantes à sombra, com destaque para Rudgea jasminoides. Como a comparação com outros estudos é prejudicada pelos diferentes tamanhos de parcelas e/ou os critérios de inclusão, sugerimos que uma padronização é necessária para melhorar o conhecimento e apoiar a conservação da biodiversidade das florestas tropicais da região Sul do Brasil.
