Caesalpinia echinata and C. ferrea var. ferrea have different seed behaviours and seed and fruit types. Comparison of the seed ontogeny and anatomy partly explained the differences in seed behaviour between these two species of Brazilian legumes; some differences were also related to fruit development. The seed coat in C. ferrea consisted of two layers of osteosclereids, as well as macrosclereids and fibres, to form a typical legume seed coat, whereas C. echinata had only macrosclereids and fibres. In C. echinata, the developing seed coat had paracytic stomata, a feature rarely found in legume seeds. These seed coat features may account for the low longevity of C. echinata seeds. The embryogeny was similar in both species, with no differences in the relationship between embryo growth and seed growth. The seeds of both species behaved as typical endospermic seeds, despite their different morphological classification (exendospermic orthodox seeds were described for C. echinata and endospermic orthodox seeds for C. ferrea). Embryo growth in C. ferrea accelerated when the sclerenchyma of the pericarp was developing, whereas embryonic growth in C. echinata was associated with the conclusion of spine and secretory reservoir development in the pericarp. Other features observed included an endothelial layer that secreted mucilage in both species, a nucellar summit, which grew up into the micropyle, and a placental obturator that connected the ovarian tissue to the ovule in C. ferrea.

Discrepant and incomplete interpretations of fruits of Pterodon have been published, especially on the structural interpretation of the pericarp portion that remain attached to the seed upon dispersal. The present work clarified these doubts and analyzed ultrastructural aspects of the Pterodon emarginatus diaspores using light and transmission electron microscopes. Cell divisions are prevalent among the initial phases of development, and the subadaxial and adaxial meristems form the fibrous inner mesocarp and the endocarp composed of multi-seriate epidermis, respectively. At the median mesocarp, numerous secretory ducts differentiate between the lateral bundles, by lytic process. After lysis of the central cells and the formation of the lumen, the ducts show unistratified secretory epithelium with dense cells; oil droplets are observed on the secretory epithelium and the subadjacent tissues. At maturity, the uniseriate exocarp and the outer mesocarp slough off in an irregular fashion, leaving the diaspore composed of a papery and brittle wing linked to a seed chamber that includes the median mesocarp composed of lignified cells, bordering vascular bundles and many secretory ducts whose epithelial cells develop large vacuoles that accumulate oleoresins. The Pterodon emarginatus fruit is a cryptosamara.

-(Morphology, anatomy and development of Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae) pericarp). In this work, we studied morphologic, anatomical and developmental aspects of Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake pericarp with aim to describe the fruit wall, supplying subsidies to taxonomic and phylogenetic works with Caesalpinioideae; still, we intend to identify and to relate the pericarp structures involved with fragmentation process, which culminates in seed dispersion. During fruit development we defined four stages: I -ovary; II -very young fruits with meristematic activity in pericarp; III -young fruits until its definitive size, characterized for the cellular elongation; IV -ripening fruits, including mesocarp and endocarp lignification, culminating in the pericarp fragmentation. In conclusion, the papiraceous part responsible to seed dispersion is the whole endocarp, including the sclerenchymatic stratum and inner parenchyma cells.Key words -anatomy, development, morphology, pericarp, Schizolobium parahyba RESUMO -(Morfoanatomia e ontogênese do pericarpo de Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake (Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae)). No presente trabalho, foram estudados aspectos morfológicos e anatômicos do pericarpo em desenvolvimento de Schizolobium parahyba (Vell.) Blake, com o objetivo de descrever esse órgão, fornecendo subsídios para trabalhos taxonômicos e filogenéticos envolvendo a subfamília Caesalpinioideae; objetivou-se, também, identificar e relacionar as estruturas do fruto, envolvidas no processo de fragmentação do pericarpo, que culmina na dispersão das sementes. Nos frutos em desenvolvimento, foi possível a definição de quatro estádios: I -ovário; II -frutos muito jovens, com atividade meristemática no pericarpo; III -frutos jovens até seu tamanho definitivo, caracterizado pelo alongamento celular; IV -fase de amadurecimento, em que ocorre a lignificação em células mesocárpicas e endocárpicas, culminando na fragmentação do pericarpo. Do estudo ontogenético, conclui-se que a parte papirácea responsável pela dispersão da semente é o endocarpo como um todo, incluindo o estrato esclerenquimático e células parenquimáticas internas.
